Question: I have a twelve week old mini dachshund puppy that I'm currently feeding Blue. Every time I serve her a bowl she walks away from the food bowl or ignores it completely. What are some high quality dog food brands I could try with her? Could someone list all the high quality dog food brands? Thank you

http://www.dogfoodadvisor.com/dog-food-r... Dry foods that have the highest ratings. And if you contact some of the companies that you can get near you before buying, quite a few will be willing to send a sample size and coupons :p

All of the dog foods you have listed are low quality dog foods! You'd do best to feed your mixed breed a high quality one. Not all pet food is made equally. A lot of it is full of corn, by-products, dyes, unhealthy preservatives, filler grains and all sorts of nasty stuff. A lot of pet food companies are perfectly happy to the dump cheap leftovers and things that aren't safe for human consumption (from human food processing plants) into their foods. Will it kill your dog? No, it has to be nutritionally complete and safe to even be marketed. Is it healthy? Not by a long shot. Corn is a low quality ingredient you never want to see in your pet food. Corn and low quality grains are two of the biggest culprits when it comes to food allergies in our pets. Thankfully, there are some excellent dog foods being made these days that include organic, human grade ingredients rather than trash not fit for human consumption. Examples of low quality foods to avoid: Anything you can find in a grocery store will be low end, Purina, Iams, Eukanuba, Science Diet, Royal Canin, Pedigree, Kibbles n' Bits, Beneful, Ol'Roy. Examples of high quality foods to look for: Innova, Wellness, Solid Gold, Canidae All Life Stages, Fromm Four Star, Merrick, GO Natural, Nature's Variety Prairie, Nature's Logic, Artemis Fresh Mix, Timberwolf Organics. Although the high quality foods are more expensive, you're getting what you're paying for. Less filler material means more concentrated nutrients... this means you typically need to feed far less of the high quality food than you would of the low quality one. Which also means less poop! Before following your vet's food recommendation, keep in mind that vets get /very/ little nutritional training during their schooling. Besides that, what training they /do/ get is usually sponsored or taught by the crappy pet food companies! They also often get paid to sell some of their products at their clinics (Science Diet, Royal Canin etc.) A great option is to go with an entirely grainless diet. Many of the high quality foods now put out grainless formulas. Some good grainless diets include: Innova EVO, Wellness CORE, Blue Wilderness, Nature's Variety Instinct, Orijen, Horizon Legacy, Merrick Before Grain, Canidae Grain Free All Life Stages, Fromm Surf & Turf, Now! and Sold Gold Barking At The Moon, Taste of the Wild. Some pretty decent foods can even be found in common pet stores. Petsmart carries Blue Buffalo products (such as the excellent grain free diet Blue Wilderness). Petco carries Wellness, Solid Gold, Natural Balance, Eagle Pack Holistic, Blue Buffalo, Castor & Pollux Organix, Pinnacle, and Halo. If you can't find a food, most of the high quality food brands have websites with store locators on them. Another option, if you can't find anywhere around you that sells good foods, is to order your pet food online. Here's an excellent place to do so: http://www.petfooddirect.com/store/ Remember that foods should be switched gradually (mixing new slowly in with the old over about a two week period), especially when switching to a higher quality one, so as not to upset tummies. Another option for feeding dogs is to feed raw. This is something that should be thoroughly researched before being attempted: http://www.barfworld.com/ http://www.rawfed.com/ http://www.rawlearning.com/ http://www.wysong.net/controversies/rawmeat.shtml Also remember that freefeeding (leaving food down) is the fast lane to canine obesity. Make sure to have scheduled feeding times based on the feeding instructions on your dog's food. How small is your dog? Has she ever eaten Blue Buffalo on her own, or is not wanting to eat new for her? Maybe she isn't big enough to eat the food you're feeding her, or she hasn't been (or isn't interested in being) completely weaned. I don't know doxies, but I had a tiny toy poodle who topped out at 4.5 lb. as an adult. She found it hard to eat dry dog food with her tiny mouth and teeth. Maybe you could put a little puppy milk or water on the food and feed it to her. Or, if she's a little bigger feed her the food piece-by-piece. If she's never had anything else, she will probably get the idea and start eating on her own as she get a little bigger.

I own an 18 week old golden puppy too! Well, anyways I feed her Pedigree. She seems to be doing quite well on it, and my 2 other adult dogs thrive on it too. I have never heard of Blue Buffalo food, so try going with Pedigree. I also hear that Nutro is good dog food too. (all organic.) Hope this helps, and Good Luck!

This is food aggression in the making. You have to correct her otherwise this possessive on food will go over into anything they are chewing on (toys, twigs, chocolate she knocked off, etc.). If you don't train her and tell her no, and you allow it to escalate, you'll get bit if you try and take something away. This is her way of saying, 'Back off! I'm alpha and this is MY food!' When in actuality it's you that is alpha and she is submissive to you. I don't care how good something is I'd even train her to drop something by the command 'Drop it' and or 'Give it here.'. That is simple after the training over food aggression has started and she's learned not to growl or bark when you take away her food. If she has something and you want it, one hand on the object, the other take your thumb and put pressure in the top of her mouth, doesn't hurt her but will make it uncomfortable. Victoria Stilwell on animal planet has great training methods for getting food aggressive dogs to hand over the food. Again this is a must other wise someone may get bitten. I've had dogs display this behavior and they quickly realize that this is unacceptable behavior.
