Does Similac Alimentum have DHA & ARA?

Does Similac Alimentum have DHA & ARA? Topic: Does Similac Alimentum have DHA & ARA?

Question: My pedi would like me to start my 4 month old on Alimentum due to severe constipation on soy and a slight rash (just raised bumps...not red) on her forehead with milk-based formula. I guess I have two questions, should I switch to Alimentum after only trying milk-based (Gentlease) for 5 days or should I just switch her? I guess part of me would like to wait it out and see if the bumps get worse and spread or if it's just an adjustment thing and they get better. Also, my concern with switching to Alimentum is that from what I've read, I don't think it has DHA and ARA in it. Does it? so should i give her a little more time on the milk-based and see what happens to the little raised bumps (not red) on her forehead?

Alimentum is a GREAT formula...my little girl is very allergic to milk and soy and has been on Alimentum for 6 months. It's pricey though, so don't use it if you don't need it. Babies don't get rashes as part of an adjustment to formula...they may have constipation or loose stools, but not rashes, they are a sign of an allergy...if your doctor recommended it I would definintely change to Alimentum, and yes it DOES have DHA and ARA in it just like the others :-) Hope this helps and best of luck!

DHA & ARA being added to formula is only a fairly recent thing. It wasn't in any of the formulas when I had my daughter just six years ago. I don't think Alimentum has it, because I sometimes pick up formula for my 6 month old granddaughter now and all the ones that have it are boldly announcing it on the front of the can, but I have yet to see it on Alimentum.

Similac has less DHA and ARA than Enfamil. The comparative formula to Allumentim is Enfamil Nutramigen. The cost is the same and the amounts of DHA are significantly higher. I use Enfamil for my son and he is doing great. Read in to Enfamil Family Beginnings website for more info. It is better. Yes, you can get an allergy from milk based formula! Listen, I work in Peds and have for 20 year. Enfamil has more Dha than Similac and allergy to milk is seen with rash all the time. Although milk allergy is not very common in babies but I see it all the time.

Those little red bumps mean something is going on in her system. When they react enough for you to actually see a rash, who knows what could possibly be happening in her little body? Eczema is often linked to a dairy allergy... and it sounds like thats the road you are about to embark on. I was formula fed from day 1. My mom never even tried to nurse me. I was forced to drink milk every day of my childhood (despite hating it) and i find out 22 years later that I am actually allergic to it. I suffered with seasonal allergies and missed numerous days of school because of this unknown allergy, and because my body was never given a break to outgrow it on it's own, i will probably have this intollerance for the rest of my life. Now... do you really want to risk that for your daughter? If youre really concerned about omega 3's, start relactating and take a fish oil supplement. ETA: and to the nurse, dairy allergies are the most common... i think its something like 50% of kids? Soy is a close second.

Yes you should switch. I went through this with my baby. The doctor had me try like three different ones and it didn't help, once I put her on this formula she was fine. It does have DHA and ARA, it is in the ingredients. I just now read through them and yes it is in there.
