My 9 month old shih tzu is acting strangely. Normally,he is very energetic and outgoing but within the last 3 days he seems uneasy about his backside. When he runs, he turns his backend to the side and stops frequently to inspect it. He drinks plenty of water and has only had two bowel movements in the last 2 days. He eats a lot of chicken,no bones and a dry food. I ocasionally give him cheese but mostly he likes jerky treats and small chew treats. Have you seen this odd behavior before? Please help.

Maybe he needs his anal glands expressed. Is he scooting his behind on the ground? Expression usually occurs naturally during defecation when fed a dry food. If you are feeding too many soft foods, you may need to express them manually. If the bowel movements were normal (diarrhea could indicate blockage - clumps of little balls could indicate constipation) I would think this is more likely the cause.

Constipation, diarrhea and IBS often occur together.
Constipation is often due to an unhealthy diet with insufficient fiber.
Most people don't eat enough fiber.
Wheat germ, wheat bran and Chia seeds are very high fiber foods and there is also a lot of fiber in fruit and vegetables.
Both constipation and IBS as well as diarrhea can be cured with liquid chlorophyll as in http://au.search.yahoo.com/search?p=%22l...

It could be constipation, if you are feeding more than once a day. 2 bowel movements in 2 days isn't normal. Try giving some plain canned pumpkin, not pie filling since it's full of sugar. It helps with both constipation and diarrhea. If it continues, probably should call your vet on monday.

I actually just got back from my Veterinarian with my dog, due to constipation. It turns out that she has a urinary tract infection, which causes cramping, which caused the constipation and obvious depression and odd behavior. My dog is 13 and this is the 1st time I've dealt with the constipation thing. I thought for sure it was something she ate, but her urine came back positive for blood. She was also very tender to the touching of her kidneys and bladder. Take your dog in, it's not worth the wait.
