Does anyone know of any Natural remedy for depression?

Question: I believe i have been suffering from depression for some time due to early teen use of marijuana and alcohol. I read that this causes the brain to have trouble producing dopamine or seratonin. Because of this I have lost more and more the ability to get excited or happy about anything and I cant remember the last time I laughed. I have no energy or reaction to things around me like im lost in my own world. I really want to feel better I want my energy levels to be much higher and I want to have a sense of well-being but I am not into prescription medications or Therapy. I believe there are natural cures for what the body lacks so if anyone knows about natural medecines to help the brain produce seratonin or dopamine and that give an energy boost I would be so grateful to hear it Thanks! Just needed to mention I have tried prayer I have asked God to help me get through this and give me strength and patience and to forgive me for certain sins but i still feel terrible and at the end of the day lately i have this headache that feels like a migrane from all the racing thoughts :-( WOW! I just have to say thank you so much to all of you for your great suggestions! I especially love the one from Fergus (who doesnt allow e-mail so ill say it here)about the epsom salts because i am a big believer in natural medecine and internal cleanse but i had no idea it could help depression....a friend of mine once told me that an enema is good but taking the salts orally sounds more appealing to me :-) Thanks! I will definitley try it asap!!!

The quickest and most effective solution I know of is epsom salts (magnesium sulphate - available at most supermarkets). A century ago this was known as "a dose of the salts" and was a regular (often weekly) dose for children - adults, too. They will flush your intestines out swiftly, and along with all the crap will go most of the negative thoughts. I use this regularly with clients who ring up reporting suicidal thoughts where I can't get to them or they can't get to me. In most cases they are back in touch within 30 minutes saying something like "I can't believe it, I feel normal again". Directions: Take 1 tablespoon of Epsom salts in a small glass of warm water mix well and swig it down as fast as you can (you wont want it to linger on your taste buds). Then drink 1- 1/2 to 2 litres of water (as much as you can) straight after. This is best done on a reasonably empty stomach - at least 4 hours without food - you can have juices or water in this period. Don't stray too far from a toilet until the flushing has become apparent. .

I'm sorry to hear you are feeling this way. You mentioned you'd rather stay clear of prescription drugs and therapy. I'm not sure if you haven't seen the success you expected with either of these. I have a family member who suffers with depression and as much as I can't quite related, it sure has been impacting us as family members. We wish there was a simple and easy solution to make help their feelings take a turn in the right direction, but many times we end up feeling hopefulness toward finding that right solution. I'm not sure how much research you've done on other supplements to aide with depression, but I've read so many great things about this supplement called, Kavince, http://www.ovitaminpro.com/kavinace.html. We've seen great adjustments with our Mother and it's even known to calm any anxiousness and help with sleeplessness. It's always best to talk with your family doctor about any supplements you are considering to take, but this may help you out the way to helped my Mom. From what I've heard, it's a testes and effective supplement that can be prescribed through doctor visits. You may want to looking into this alternative if you aren't experiencing any luck elsewhere. Best of luck to you!

I know this is probably an answer you don't want to hear, but I'll say it anyway.... I suffered from depression for over 10 years and I'm only 26 years old! I finally beat my depression less than a year ago. How did I do it? Prayer and church. I finally couldn't take it anymore and last year I finally started dealing with it. I went to church (a Christian church) and I asked friends to pray with me. I asked God, personally, to help me deal with it and/or take it away. I no longer have this 10 yr + problem. It worked for me and I know it'll work for you too! Doctors tried to give me medicine, but what good does that do besides "numb" the depression or temporarily fix it? Why not get rid of it all the way? I'd rather it be gone than numb and there's no one better to help me with that problem than God. Hope this helps you!

Natural remedies for depression include exposure to sunlight and exercise. Both of these are known to increase the 'happy' chemicals in your brain. Engaging in a project that you're interested in will give you a sense of achievement, and that too will increase the natural happy chemicals in your brain. Chocolate, and lettuce (bizarrely!) are known to be good too. I wish you all the best. There's also a cook book called 'good mood food' which has some amazing recipes in which will naturally improve your mood. Eating lots of fresh fruit and veg will help you one thousand percent. But if you find you can't cope, please see a doctor. Don't let yourself become seriously ill. I wouldn't want you to end up in the nuthouse like me, lol.

To help yourself, you can pray about your life. Tell God about it. God can help you. God is love. Know that God can help you live a better life. You can have a personal relationship with God by saying the prayer below. God is all-knowing, all-powerful, eternal, holy, love. God loves us and sent us His Son, Jesus Christ, so we can go to heaven if we know and follow Him. Forever means without end -- time on and on without death. Forever is what happens after we die. Either we go to heaven and be with God forever, or we go to hell which is very bad and painful forever. The good people who are saved believers in Jesus Christ go to heaven. The bad people go to hell. We need to know and follow God in this world to get to heaven in the next world. We follow God by loving and obeying Him and loving others for Him. Jesus Christ, God's Son, is our bridge to God. Jesus died on the cross to cancel our sins. We need to accept Jesus into our life as our Lord and Savior forever to receive God's blessing and forgiveness plus go to heaven to be with God forever after we die. This is about being a born-again Christian. Faith in God is a gift from God. You can pray for faith in God. Just speak out and ask God for the faith to believe in Him and to follow Him. Some people find faith in God when they realize the beauty in the world is made by God. Evolution can't explain the world's natural beauty, for example, the parks in the world, animals, flowers, peacocks, sunsets, butterflies, rainbows, etc. After you have your faith on, you can pray a sinner's prayer to be a born-again Christian. This prayer is very important and should be said with a sincere heart and faith in God. This is the prayer: "Dear God, I know that I am a sinner and that Jesus Christ is the sacrifice for our sins. I have done the following sins (state these out) and I pray to discontinue these sins. I pray to receive Jesus Christ into my life as my Lord and Savior forever. In Jesus' name, amen." I'm Lutheran and I like the Baptist churches too. You could check out a Christian church youth group or Bible study group to learn about God's will for your life. You can pray to God about your daily life and have a Christian church pray for you.

Fatigue, lethargy, lack of motivation and increased (or decreased) appetite are all symptoms of depression. If you can't discern a cause for the depression, it could be organic, meaning an illness rather than just a "down" mood. Clinical depression is thought to be caused by the brain reabsorbing the chemical "Serotonin" before it can reach it's receptors. Serotonin makes you feel happy and content, and without it, you get clinical depression. There's a whole class of drugs for depression known as Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors, or SSRIs which basically stop the brain from reabsorbing the Serotonin, making more available to reach the receptors. If you've been going through this for a year, then it's time for you to see a psychiatrist about what's going on. You may need medication, and/or talk therapy.
