Question: Honestly, if healthy food was cheap, it would be bought WAY more than junk food. The economy is horrible, people can't eat healthy because all the healthy food is expensive. Hence lots of Americans being obese.... I don't get it ? can someone explain, please

It doesn't. That is a myth. People eat junk because they choose to. Frozen and canned vegetables, generic plain cereal (cheerios, bran cereal), generic rolled oats (not instant oatmeal) beans, rice (brown), eggs, and milk are as cheap or cheaper than sugar-laden cereal, cookies, chips, pop, and prepared foods like "instant" meals and frozen prepared meals, and these foods are WAY cheaper than fast food or restaurant meals. I shop at Aldi and for the price of a bag of chips or cookies you can buy a bag of frozen vegetables, a bag of fresh apples, bananas, carrots, or salad mix, or several cans of vegetables, a quart of plain yogurt, a dozen eggs, a box of whole-grain pasta, or a loaf of whole wheat bread. I don't buy anything with sugar, buy only whole grain products and the items I mentioned above, plus some meat (frozen ground turkey) and spend about $50 per person per month. I eat out extremely rarely- only for special occasions and if I am in the mood for fast food I get a small sandwich- no sides, no drinks. People also need to do some vigorous activity daily or almost every day. I get up at 5:30 or 6 every day and walk for an hour before work. It is possible if you set your mind to it.

Having been the person responsible for buying and preparing meals for my family for the past 15 years, I have to disagree with your assertion that healthy food is cheaper than junk food. Pure, healthy foods are practically a luxury item, they always carry the heftiest price. Fresh foods, whole grains, and lean meats are 3 or 4 times more expensive than their regular, less healthy counterparts. And, having lived in several states, this isn't just a local trend in pricing. The cheapest food items that can be purchased are laden with fat, sugar, and carbohydrates. Muffin mixes, white pastas, cheesy powdered concoctions, fried foods, processed mixed meats, rices and potatoes, sugary snacks, chips, etc. I've seen no evidence to suggest than a pound of quality food is cheaper than a pound of junk. Go to a local food bank and see what they give to the needy. It's not quality food, it's a lot of starches and processed junk - because pound for pound, it's much cheaper and goes a lot further.

Junk food does not cost less than healthy food. The idea that junk food costs drastically cheaper than healthy foods was created right after the world wars when families settled down and focused on family living and extracurricular activities, where they prioritized their lives (including what they eat) around those two factors, because of this they leaned towards fast foods, snacks, and other not so healthy foods. Fortunately since that time we have gotten better at educating ourselves about foods, unfortunately a lot of us were raised by the people who grew up with the notion that it was okay to eat unhealthy foods for all meals, and if you look at people who are obese, their ages directly correspond around the time of the wars. What people need to know is that if you were to go grocery shopping twice, one with unhealthy foods, and one with healthy foods, than yes, typically the healthy grocery list will be a bit higher, but think about how many meals you will be getting out of it. If you shop for the unhealthy foods, you will be at the grocery store very soon after, as those foods contain empty calories with no nutritional value. With healthy foods you are getting more nutrition for your dollar, with unhealthy foods you are getting convenience.

People aren't obese because healthy food is expensive. People are obese because they choose convenience over health benefits. Driving through McDonald's is faster than cooking a meal at home, and people don't exercise as much as they should.

Once you cut junk food out of your diet, you will notice an increase in your energy level and mood. Soon enough your taste buds will crave things like fruits and begetbles rather than fatty empty calorie foods like chips, chocolate, fast food, etc. The sooner you begin to cut out those foods and eat healthy, the sooner the urges for those kinds of bad foods will leave. Just slowley add maybe a serving or two of fruits and vegetables into your daily diet, then start to take out things like ice cream, chocolate and junk food like chips, and those processed snacks and fast food. Hope that helps!
