Question: Wanting to lose about 10 pounds ( left over baby weight), what is the best way on a low - carb diet? Eat under 20 carbs a day, exercise, and drink lots of water. Will that do it?

Yes. There is much debate about benefits (or harms) or low carb diets. A good compromise done by a lot of my friends is to do the low carb diet for 2 weeks (what Atkins calles 'induction' and what South Beach calls "Phase I) and then return to a balanced diet. Make sure you take vitamins while you're doing this. Be aware of side effects such as low energy (intial), constipation, and headache. You should also consider an alternative diet, such as Ph-balancing (a.k.a. alkalizing diet). Check out a book called "Ph Miracle" by R. Young. You can try this today: Mix juice squeezed from a fresh lemon with water, maple syrup and sea sault. One glass of this will supress you hunger for at least 30 minutes. This should be enough to convince you that there is something to this and read up about alkalizing diets online or at the library.

There's lots of great websites out there, but low carb eating is fairly simple depending on which one you're looking for. Here's a few sites that I really like that have great info:

when you eat calorie friendly fruits and vegetables that are in season they tend to taste better and you re more likely to enjoy them

Low - carb is behind the curve. You need to be eating lots of good carbs. The bad carbs make you fat and old before your time and cause diabetes. Good carbs like celery and carrots will never make you fat. Bad carbs like cake will, but you don't need to know the whole science of glycemic index and load. It is mostly NOT your fault, if you need to lose weight. The way we have been taught to eat is responsible for making obesity the number one health problem in the world (according to Atlantic Monthly magazine) replacing hunger and infectious disease. You need to re-learn how to eat so you can become thin. Not a diet, but diet lifestyle. Find out about fastest way to lose weight, gradual ways to lose weight, most effective exercise, good and bad carbs and anti-water. Lose bodyfat and retained water which also makes you a lot fatter (bloated). Links page has gov. BMI calculater to find out just how much overweight you are (teens plug in your age to compare to others your age). Most important-- make sure to read the last "fat loss tip", first before anything else, to see the number one food that causes Americans to be fat. http://phifoundation.org

eliminating carbs will initially cause weight loss but you are depriving your body of a great source of energy. you need to eat healthy and exercise to lose weight. doing it the healthy way will keep the weight off and make you feel better in the long run. you need to eat 3 moderate meals and 3 snacks a day and your caloric intake, to lose weight, should be between 1500-1700 calories a day and 2000-2200 to maintain your weight. you should eat plenty of high fiber, brightly colored fruits, vegies, berries, and whole wheat, whole grain, high fiber carbs such as wheat breads, pastas, tortillas, cereals, crackers, oatmeal, popcorn, and lean proteins such as fish, chicken, beans, peanut butter, nuts, ham, turkey, and low/nonfat dairy products such as milk, yogurt, and cheeses. soy products are also very healthy and should be included. also, you NEED to EXERCISE!! if you are a beginner, start with 30 minutes of cardio, such as walking, 4 days a week. after a month, bump it up to 45 minutes 4 days a week, and start adding some weight/resistance training to help build lean muscle which will help keep your metabolism revving. during the 3rd month, walk 45 minutes 5 days a week with weight work for 30 minutes 4 days a week. by the 4th month, you could possibly be walking 60 minutes a day 5 days a week while working with weights 30 minutes a day 4 days a week. vary your activities with speed walking, running, sprinting(not jogging), rollerblading, swimming and dancing. make sure to stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water and green tea. eat real, natural food. don't eliminate any of the food groups

No, cut out all carbs you can do without and research what is high in carbs, like carrots, sweet potatoes, pineapples, corn, cause people forget that sort of thing.

The two Internet resource listed at the bottoms of this reply are good for low carbohydrate recipes and in-depth information. They are both free websites. I hope this helps you, Lyndsey. Good luck with your diet.
