Question: I was recently switched to a drug that has a very major side effect of making me sleep too long and I consistently wake up tired. On weekends, I sleep from 9 pm to noon, and still wake up tired. I am used to going to bed at midnight and waking up around 0530 AM, with no problems at all. But these drugs seem to just drag me down. Is there something that I can take that will help with these problems? Would Valerian root help?

you might want to look into a bio alarm clock or the like. if you wake up during a certain part of your sleep cycle you will wake up tired, but if you wake up during the right phase of sleep (im not sure which it is-rem or not) you will awake refreshed. i use an iphone app that measures how much and when i move in my sleep because this indicates where you are in your sleep cycle. (you dont toss and turn while you are dreaming because your body is in sleep paralysis) so the gentle alarm wakes me up during the right phase of sleep and i am not tired. (as opposed to a certain time, which may or not be the right phase)

Tea (Night Time/Sleepy Time Extra with Valerian) helps me a lot. Staying active during the day and then giving yourself an hour or two to wind down. Stay away from too much stimulation like TV or lights an hour before. I also have a lavender eye mask...I LOVE it, it helps me sleep longer. I know it's funny but warm milk or warm milk in your tea helps too. Take a warm shower before bed, don't drink wine though, I've noticed it can actually put me to sleep but then I wake up later, your looking for longer sleep not just something to knock you out.:) Good Luck, hope you are able to sleep well soon!

There is a vitamin called Melatonin that you can buy at most grocery stores and basically all health-food stores. Basically it's used to treat jet-lag. You take it and you're asleep 20-30 minutes later but it only makes you have a good 7-8 hours of sleep and no more. It's a naturally occurring chemical in the body so the vitamin acts as a precursor to it. If you have really bad insomnia I'd say take two a night about 20 minutes before bed time. Oh, and no side effects.

May be you should change your medicine. Why not use natural remedies to correct your problem. Drugs you took will create side effect one after the other and you will end up trying to correct each side effect which is difficult to do because the drug you took is powerful. Every health problem has a natural remedies to help you. Just search for "natural remedies for ..."

Keep regular sleeping hours! Exercise! Try increasing you minerals especially before you go to sleep. Take a multi mineral supplement just before you go to sleep!!

To sleep better just relax and switch off, if you can.
