Question: Looking for good natural suplements to beat the anxiety/stress and genral panic and feeling of uneasyness from quitting cannabis. I am taking a multi vitamin and green tea's.. how good is st john wort in comparison to anti depressants? Is there anything else i can try for the better on my body? plz reply with serious answers only :D

St John's Wort relaxes me like crazy. There are other herbs though...Chamomile, lemon balm and linden flowers are all considered mild relaxants and tranquilizers. Lemon balm is particularly good for digestive problems linked to anxiety. Skullcap is somewhat stronger, while valerian, hops (humulus lupulus), and passionflower all have an even stronger effect on the central nervous system. These three help with insomnia and can be combined to advantage. However, hops should not be used with marked depression, and valerian-to be effective- must be used in fairly high dosage (1/2 to 1 tsp of the tincture). If the anxiety is associated with palpitations, use motherwort. If it is connected to high blood pressure, use cramp bark (Viburnum opulus) and linden blossoms. For all herbs, make an infusion by pouring boiling water over 1 to 3 tsp of the dried herbs or a handful of fresh herbs. Steep for 10 to 15 minutes. Take a small cupful three or four times a day. You can buy the tincture of any of these herbs in a health food store; follow the directions on the bottle. Glad you quit. Real life is pretty cool once you get used to it. Good luck and Godspeed.

The thing with SSRI's is that everyone is different. They all work in generally the same manor but target different receptors in the brain. One drug that works well for a person doesn't always work well for the next. Try the paxil first. It could take 2-3 weeks before it is working it's best. If at that time you are not feeling any better talk it over with your doctor again. Some people have to try several different pills before finding the right pill and dosage that works best. On a positive note I know a couple of people that were really pleased with the way Paxil worked for them. One other note, you need to keep taking the drug, if you feel its not working, talk over with your Doc, but if you quit using it suddenly you can have some bad experiences. Usually they will lower dosages gradually to prevent this.

There are a variety of herbs and supplements which increase serotonin, the brain's neurotransmitter targeted by the block buster prescription anti-depressant Prozac. Prior to Prozac's introduction, many people successfully used the amino acid tryptophan to support serotonin levels, but it was withdrawn months before the introduction of Prozac due to a new industrial process that poisoned a few users. Tryptophan is once again available, now that Prozac is nearing the end of its profitable patent run. The related 5-HTP has been a tryptophan substitute for a decade or more. Both can help with sleep as well. Both of these supplements are available in health food stores. Fish oil has recently gained a reputation for increasing serotonin levels, and is widely available without prescription. It should be taken with antioxidants as it has a tendency to become rancid. One herb that always has been available and is widely used by doctors in Europe is St. John's Wort. There are studies showing it more effective than Prozac, and should not be used with Prozac unless supervised by a doctor balancing your levels. Finally, SAM-e a sulfur based amino acid, has shown some usefulness in depression. For raising dopamine levels you need to consider tyrosine, Phenylalanine, and some of the "adaptogenic" herbs that have been studied in the Soviet Union such as horse radish. There are a lot of books in the library on this that can help you find non-prescription support. Some of these deal with the issue of shifting from prescription drugs to a more natural approach. But there is a surprising amount of work that one can do within that requires no drugs nor herbs, and is very effective. I hope you're looking into that as well. Some of these are mentioned above, but I didn’t see meditation or what’s known as cognitive behavioral therapy (positive thinking). ================

St. John's wart has been shown to be effective in improving mood. However, it probably isn't as effective as prescribed antidepressants. It is helpful for more mild symptoms. A B-complex vitamin can be added too along with your multivitamin. That helps to improve energy and mood. I don't know if you are on any meds, but St. John's can interfere with some of them...such as birth control pills.

depression, anxiety etc are organic problems (you have a neurotransmitter problem) and medications are the best for resolving these problems. Herbal is great, but they will not give you a compound that will directly address your specific needs but may only give you a little symptom relief. Just my two cents from someone who suffers from depression/anxiety

Many drugs can be mentioned that they have anti-depressive but no weight gain effects... Here to talk about drugs' names may not be correct approach... I don't know which drug you went on before but i can say many antidepressants causing weight gain increase appetite and weight gain effect depends on increased appetite mainly... Some other metabolic changes can be cared as secondary for gaining weight... And some drugs can cause an extreme weight gain effect on someone but for any other patient can not be shown same effect.... Even a reverse effect may occur... So personal or specific approaches may be more suitable for depression treatment or antidepressant using conversations.. Keppra is not an antidepressant but strong anti epileptic and mood stabilizer
