Common problem. Your gastrointestinal fluid absorption is all messed up right now. Certainly try drinking more water, but obviously bladder capacity and need to frequently urinate may make you reluctant to do that as well. Anxiety is common too. The slow deep breathing you may be learning for delivery can help with these jitters. Your obstetrician may be willing to prescribe an inexpensive stool softener like Colace (docusate)--it is not a laxative. Any drug is suspect in pregnancy, but there are no known-for-sure issues with Colace in pregnancy and it has been around for a while. Some obstetricians will prescribe it. Others may not though, so all you can do is ask what your obstetrician recommends for you. You can call and leave a message for something like this. Some practices would handle it over the phone; others may need to see you first. I'm sorry you're having a tough time. Good luck. Day by day. Week by week. You'll get there.

You are not drinking enough water. If you don't like water try mango juice, it seems to work like a laxative for me. Fibre tablets without water will just make it worse. What does it say on the packet ?

Check out your local health food store and pick up a package of "Smooth Move" herbal tea. One cup before bed time will produce results the following morning. A friend with a chronic medical condition that requires use of prescription medicines that cause constipation as a side effect told me about this and gave me 3 or 4 teabags a few years ago when I was having the same problem and it works wonders. However, if this does not work for you, you will need to go to the doctor and have your condition assessed.

Your best solution is a warm water enema. It works in minutes and doesn't have any side effects. It's also a good idea to have an enema at home when your labor starts to avoid the nurse giving you one at the hospital with all the residents watching. The enema can also help your labor progress and can also help start labor if it's time to deliver.

Laxatives can give you terrible cramps, too. I personally avoid them. To counteract constipation, you need plenty of fiber and lots of water in your diet. If you can't eat enough fresh fruits, vegetables and whole grains, then you can supplement your diet with fiber through other means. There are products you can buy at the drugstore, like FiberCon, or you can go to the health food store and get natural products. Either way, it will take time. Having said all that, if you haven't seen a doctor, you might want to schedule a checkup if this problem continues. You could have an intestinal blockage rather than just simple constipation.
