Topic: Constipated Baby?
September 23, 2019 / By Dorinda Question:
My daughter is 2 month and 2 week and 1 day =). She gets constipated very often and I brought this up to the pediatrician today. He said to put a tea spoon of sugar in her bottle and it should come right out.
What I have been doing when she is constipated is mix one once apple prune with 3 once of water and feed her about 2 once of that. the doctor said don’t do that but give her a tea spoon of sugar in her bottle. I do not feel comfortable doing that ( like who gives there baby sugar) I rather do something that is natural. What do you other moms think or recommend, please remember my babies age and what is most age appropriate. I also heard of Kyro syrup and don’t really want to do that either. Any suggestions????

My baby has been constipated since he was 2 weeks old. He has continual hard, dry, large stools. So, I took him to a GI specialst. You may want to consider doing this. There are problems that can cause constipation. The suggestions I have tried...
1) Karo syrup in the bottle 2 X's a day. (I really, really didn't want to do this but was desperate.)
2) Rectal Stimulation...KY on thermometer...suppositories. (My doctor told me to do this and we ended up doing it so much he became dependent on it. He is now trying to learn how to poop at 5 months old. So...I wouldn't recomend this.)
3) Water...which made him choke or Pedialite.
4) Baby Acedophelus...this was a suggestion from a homeopathic doctor. For my little guy it didn't work.
5) At 2 months old they told me to give him prune juice. Like someone said already. It made his tummy crampy and he still didn't poop.
6) Pears have helped a little.
7) I changed his formula several times. I finally found one that works for him. (Are you bottle feeding?) I wanted to stay away from Nestle but their Good Start is the only one that works for him. I think it's because it has a lower amount of Iron in it than the others. (Did you know that mothers milk has appx. 0.6 Iron and formula has 1.8?)
8) Ped GI gave him a stool softener.
If you start him on foods or juices...Stay away from bananas, apples, carrots & berries. The things that are good for constipation...prune, apricot, pear, peach, mango, grape, plum, & pineapple.
Good Luck...I hope you find your solution faster than I did.

I'm not sure how old yours is, but my daughter is almost six months. She was constipated and her doctor told me to mix 1-2 Tbs. of Dark Karo Syrup (start with 1) with 4 oz. of water. He told me to give that to her once a day until the constipation went away. It didn't work for us because she doesn't like the taste and won't drink it (she's only had cereal and formula so far), but thats the advice I got from the doctor maybe it will help you.
Formula contains suger either lactose, corn syrup or both. However liquid corn syrup may be contaminated with the spores that cause infant botulism so it should not be used for children under age one, the corn syrup in formula should be safe due to processing. Therefore solid sugar such as white or brown is safer.
Also juice is waaaaaaay more likely to cause digestive problems and allergies.
However there is a much larger issue here: your daughter is constipated a lot -seriously she's what 11 weeks old? She shouldn't have any chronic problems. You need to find the source of the problem and FIX IT.
The problem with chronic constipation is it is a vicious cycle. Baby is constipated and poops and it hurts so they hold it in which makes them constipated. This should not happen in a baby so young but it can happen after around 6 months. Then you will have a mental issue in addition to the physical problem that is causing the constipation.
Really this needs to be fixed.

Try half apple juice and half water. That worked for a little while with daughter, but then had to go with kyro syrup which worked like a charm. She was so constipated that she would tear, so if yours isn't that bad the apple juice should work.

Well I didn't know you could give a baby that young anything besides water, breastfeeding, or formula. I was told by a nurse to put KY on a rectal thermometer and ya...baby should poop within a few hours. lubricating the ya you know. I didn't try it cause I'm not comfortable doing that but I had so many
.people tell me that it actually works! So there's a different idea...good luck.

unfortunately, my son had that problem when he was infant. we had to give him enemas. it was the only thing besides the prune juice that worked. when he got older, we increased his fiber. popcorn was a good choice because he liked it and it had a good amount of fiber. he had chronic constipation until he was about 6 yrs. old. if you feel really guilty about giving her sugar, maybe you could buy an organic product, such as raw sugar that would be healthier.

Is your baby acting uncomfortable. If not, she might have just skipped a day. Bowel movement schedules can change as a baby gets older and she starts eating solid foods. If your baby is acting uncomfortable, you might try calling your doctors nurse. The nurse usually knows what the doctor usually recommends. Your doctor may recommend juice. My doctor had recommeded Kyro Syrup mixed with water, however I know some doctors are adamently against doing this. Your babies doctor may even recommend an enema. My daughter ended up needing the enema. My advice is to double check with your doctor which approach they feel would best suit your child.
