I'm 20 years old and weigh about 150 lbs. I used to run track as a hurdler/sprinter and in high school I weighed about 120. I would like to lose about 20-30 pounds by the end of the summer.
One big problem I'm having right now, though, is that when I was 19, I led a primarily sedentary lifestyle (I was highly depressed and didn't have the energy/drive to stay in shape). I've been slowly easing myself back to running and I do a stationary bike at the gym. The problem is the old fat I gained when I was depressed seems to be having a hard time just going away. If you have any tips for getting rid of old fat, could you let me know?
I also started birth control the summer after my senior year of high school and gaining weight is a side effect of that. Is there any way to counteract it?
Also, I've been starting to count my calories and would like to know if there is a formula or anything of the sort that can tell me approximately how many calories I have to burn in order to lose weight. I've heard a lot of different things (fat calories, carbs from fat, etc.) and I'm just wondering if anyone can tell me the real way.
Another thing... has anyone heard about garcinia cambogia? Do you recommend I try taking it?
This summer I'm living on a 2500 acre ranch with a lot of running trails and hills, so I can get back into running that way too. There's also a pool to swim in, and I will be riding my horse about five times a week.
I just really need to get back in shape... I used to be really self-confident about how I looked and now I just feel heavier on my feet and jiggly. I used to be real tight and muscular. I look at pictures of myself these days and it makes me sad. Something needs to change. I know 150 isn't overweight but the problem is that I'm not in shape anymore. I would like to become fit again. That's all.

When serotonin levels increase, octopamine simultaneously increases. Octopamine is the hormone that causes mobilization of fat cells. When these two hormones work together, weight loss occurs.
As for diet, I would suggest cutting out or severely limiting all white foods. If it's white, don't eat it. No sugar, no bread (unless it's 100% whole grain, not whole wheat, and limit to 2 servings per week), no cereal, no pasta that isn't made from quinoa or similar, no potatoes, and no flour.
Get your fat from foods like avocados, almonds, and healthy oils like olive and canola. Absolutely no soda. Not even diet. Diet soda prevents weight loss. Cut out juices unless you squeeze the fruit yourself. There is added sugar in EVERY juice - they are just not required to disclose that on the label.
Fill up on healthy proteins (fish, chicken, turkey, eggs, even lean pork & beef), vegetables (no more than 2 servings of starchy veggies per week), and fruit. Limit the fruits highest in sugar and starch to 1-2 per week, including bananas, pineapple, grapes.
Set small goals and reward yourself with something fun (mine was shopping for a new piece of clothing or pair of shoes).
Find out your BMR + Activity Level and eat 300-500 calories less than that per day. Doing just that will likely reduce the scale by up to a pound per week.
Drink 100 ounces of water per day. Not Vitamin water - PURE water. The general rule is half your body weight in number of ounces, but no more than 100. Never skimp on water. It keeps your system running smoothly. A good psyllium husk supplement helps with that too.

I am not a fan of diet pills at all.
That being said you are smart enough to at least consider Alli. The only FDA approved diet supplement on the market.
Losing weight is 80% diet. You just can't lose weight starving or eating a fad diet.
If you couple a healthy diet with Alli you will lose weight. Be advised Alli causes sudden and oily stools so you will need to adjust to it. The less fat you eat, the less the side effects. It is a good training tool that way.
Exercise and healthy eating is the key. Now remember, the rule says if energy taken in is less than energy used, weight is lost. You are planning on exercising, which is absolutely brilliant! You will tone. However, don't count your calories, instead, make sure you are not overeating and that you eat healthy foods instead of fatty foods. Substitute healthy foods for fatty foods. Have weetabix, semi skimmed milk and throw in some fruit for breakfast, instead of toast and butter. Have an apple instead of a bag of potato chips for a snack. Boil your food rather than fry them, mix in vegetables! in fact, always start off your meal with vegetables. This will slightly fill you up, so you dont go on to eat other foods that contain more energy. All of this will add up, and before you know it, voila! You have lost weight and you have a lovely toned body!

when you eat calorie friendly fruits and vegetables that are in season they tend to taste better and you re more likely to enjoy them
