Question: I started a low carb and sugar diet 4 days ago. Since than I've experienced several strange things with my body. My hands and face feel numb. My arms feel weak and the muscles are sore despite no activity. Finally heart pain. Dull little aches that happen frequently. Went to the doc today and they gave me a b12 deficiency blood test no results until next week. Someone I know mentioned diabetes? Anyone know what this could be? I don't want to give this diet up!

I've heard of and experienced the Atkins flu, which is when your body goes through withdrawals as you switch over from glucose burning to fat burning. I was weak, nauseous, and dizzy during the "flu." I didn't have any numbness, however. The heart pain could actually be indigestion from your diet. Are you eating a lot of meat or spicy food? Sometimes we want to associate any chest pain we have with heart pain, but most chest pains have nothing to do with the heart. Obviously, we need to get chest pain checked, but just know that it's unlikely that there's something suddenly wrong with your heart from a low-carb diet. More than likely, it's something you're eating not sitting well with you. Sometimes people feel numbness when their blood sugar is low or dropping from a high point to a not-necessarily hypoglycemic point. That might be why someone said "diabetes." I don't think you need to give the diet up, but you should evaluate what exactly is in your diet. Low-carb diet is a very broad term. Some people think it means high protein, some people think it means high fat, some people think it means "lots of carbs, as long as they're GOOD carbs!," some people think it means low fat and low calorie. So what exactly are you eating? I found that, when you remove most sources of carbs, you need a lot of healthy fats to give you energy. Fat is what you want your body to use as its alternate energy source, so if you go low carb and low fat, you just feel weak. And while you need adequate protein, you don't need more than the amount your body uses to maintain muscles and organ function. There's no reason to go high protein, in other words. Usually the weak feeling dissipates after a week or two when the withdrawal period finally ends, but it's painful, let me tell you. If you are B12 deficient, a low-carb diet usually helps because animal products are rich sources of B12.

The pain associated with lupus is usually a result of inflammation. The inflammation is the result of an immune system that has gone mad. If the inflammation is not treated the pain will return as soon as the drugs wear off. Lupus patients on pain management (which I think is a good idea in this case) often change meds periodically because patients can build up a tolerance to the pain medications, rendering them less effective. The pain causes anxiety (fear, depression, etc) which in turn aggravate the lupus and create more inflammation and pain. When you feel like your life and your body are out of control, of course you will be anxious. And telling someone to "just think positive" only causes more aggravation when you are in pain and afraid. You wife might considering seeing a pain management specialist for the pain and a good mental health counselor to deal with the emotional issues that come along with a chronic and incurable illness like lupus. Psychologists who work with oncology (cancer) patients are likely to understand the issues.

lupus is painful. I have it, so I know. I hate to agree with the above answers but if you are addicted to the pain meds, your body will manufacture pain in order to get more.With the addict gene in my family, so far I have been able to choose rest, Aleve, etc to manage my pain. Prayer helps too. I'll pray for you and your wife.

Carbohydrates ARE sugar when they get to the digestive system. All plant derived foods contain some carbohydrates and some contain a lot. I take a good daily multi vitamin because the doctor says my idea of low carb is too restrictive and I need the extra vitamins. This may have absolutely nothing to do with your food plan! Just be a little patient and wait for the blood panel results to come back. Peace and Prayers

Don't get too low on the carbs, it's your body's primary energy source. If your body has to go to fat and protein for energy ketone levels may rise causing muscle cramping.

Keep your diet healthy. Stay away from animal fat (meat, dairy products). If you have to have them, make it for a special occasion. Eat lots of vegetables. Try taking CoQ10 daily. Keep exercising and getting the heat muscle working hard to push all the blood through it. This will help with stress. In short, a good diet, exercise and a more laid back attitude towards life will help your heart stay strong.
