Question: I am currently 27, 5'6, and 153 pounds. I don't drink soda or eat junk food. I drink some water but not a lot. I already only eat 2 meals a day. How many calories should I take in each day? I really need to lose the weight.

Do: • Drink lots of water, to flush excess fluid out of your system and help move high-fiber foods along the intestinal tract. • Eat water-rich fruits and vegetables, like oranges, tomatoes, asparagus, and celery, which act as gentle, natural diuretics. • Eat potassium-rich foods, like bananas, spinach, and apricots, since this mineral counteracts sodium and helps rid the body of water. • Eat slowly; when you eat quickly, you gulp more air, which leads to gas and bloating. Don't: • Drink lots of carbonated drinks, which cause gas and bloating. • Eat a lot of cruciferous vegetables (like broccoli) right before putting on a slim-fit dress, since this causes gas and bloating. • Eat foods high in salt, which causes water retention throughout the body and belly. • Chew gum, as it makes you swallow air and become — you guessed it — gassy and bloated. — From Lyssie Lakatos, dietitian and cofounder of The Nutrition Twins

I don't want to sounds like I'm lecturing you, but here goes! I used to suffer from eating disorders so I know every trick in the book when it comes to losing a whole heap of weight in a few days. I presume you want to lose the weight long term though, not just for a period of time? Speaking purely from experience, that's virtually impossible. You can easily lose the weight but only through very unhealthy methods - like fasting or eating little and purging (I am NOT recommending this - it's a very very slippery slope!). But the only way you'll keep it off if you do this is to continue this kind of 'diet', which can only result in you ending up in hospital in the long term. It's not the way to go. But say if you fasted for a week and lost 14lbs and then went back to eating properly the following week, the weight will come straight back on and you'll probably end up heavier than you were before. Trust me, I've done it about a thousand times in the past! It will be mostly water weight that you lose for starters. And your metabolism will drop greatly, meaning it'll be far easier for you to gain weight in the future. Believe me I know more than anyone the frustration in wanting to lose weight NOW and not have to wait. But to be done successfully I'm afraid it just HAS to be done over a longer period of time. You'll find that in the first few weeks of a diet you'll lose a surprising amount of weight anyway, as there's usually a sudden drop in weight and then the weight-loss will end up tailing off to 1 or 2 lbs a week in the long term. But you could easily lose 10lbs in your first month healthily. I'm not the best person to recommend what you should be eating - the only advice I could give really is to drink LOTS of water and exercise regularly to keep your metabolism up - the higher your metabolism, the faster you'll lose weight. Look up on the internet what the best foods to eat are to keep your metabolism up. But your best bet diet wise would be to go to your GP, explain your realistic weight-loss targets and he'll be able to design you a healthy diet plan tailored to your own requirements. Please don't go down the 'unhealthy' route - at best, you'll gain the weight back, and at worst, you'll end up with a full blown eating disorder. Good luck :-)

First off, to lose the most weight, eat 6 medium-small meals a day. second, it will be pretty hard t lose 10 pounds in half a month, but you can lose a few. And LOW CARB, LOW FAT, LO CAL DOES NOT, DOES NOT, DOES NOT help. You must eat ALL foods to stay healthy and lose weight. DO NOT ELIMINATE WHOLE GROUPS OF FOODS. And it is a myth you can not eat after a certain time. As long as you dont go overboard, you can eat at 11 at night. Good luck!

I've lost 5 kilos in my first week. It's my 10th day and I have included salad with some protein (eg. egg/ lean chicken) as you suggested. After 4 years of trying, the fat is finally coming off. It truly feels like magic! Get started today!

part of the reason is 2 meals a day the less often you eat the more your body goes into starvation mode and retains as much as possible --spread it out over 6 meals -lots of protein and vegetable fibre and lots of water concentrate on veg fruit and fibre lots of good info on the internet

You cannot lose 20 pounds in a week. It would probably take about 2 months, or more, for you to lose 20 pounds. Weight loss is an overall process. You need to think about many factors. There are many sensible things you can do that will make a tremendous difference over the long term if you need to lose weight. It can be done in a healthy way. This is what has worked for me. Keeping a food journal really does help. It will give you a much better sense of how much you are eating, and when, and why. Make a few additional small changes - walk everywhere, always use stairs instead of elevators, walk on escalators, get up and move around at least once an hour if your work or your life in general is sedentary, walk every day, use a pedometer. Walking 10,000 steps a day is a really good idea. Build up to a long brisk walk everyday, or most days. Be more active and watch less TV and spend less time on the computer. Buy one piece of exercise equipment to have at home and be strict with yourself about using it. Sometimes you can find mini-steppers or exercise bikes at second hand stores and thrift stores for just a few dollars. Start a weight lifting routine. Join a gym. Possibly you can find one that has someone who specializes in weight lifting programs for beginners. Weight lifting will increase your metabolism as well as improve posture and appearance overall. Even if you can't get to the gym you can work out at home using things around the house. Invest in a good weight training book. The Dummies series actually has a good one. In terms of diet, cut out or reduce things like junk food, pop, fat, fast food. Eat more fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean meat, fish. Particularly if you choose a vegetarian lifestyle include natural peanut butter, hummus, dried fruit and nuts. Pay close attention to getting the nutrients your body needs to be healthy. Make your portion sizes smaller. Use a smaller plate - in our society we have become accustomed to thinking that we need a large plate of food at every meal, and we don't. About quarter of your plate of food should be protein and at least half of it should be veggies. Learn to count calories. At your current weight and activity level, you may possibly need about 2000 calories or more to maintain your current weight. So you will lose weight at a reasonable and healthy rate if you cut back to about 1600 or 1700 calories a day. Eat small amounts frequently, rather than three large meals. Never skip breakfast. Include some protein in your breakfast. It will help get you through the day. Drink plenty of water, at least 8 big glasses of water a day, and more if it is very hot, if you sweat a lot, or if you are exercising intensely, and eliminate fruit juices. Fruit juices have too many calories, so get your vitamins from fresh fruit, not the juice. You will begin to see changes in your body. An area that many people overlook is getting enough sleep. You are much more likely to overeat or to binge eat if you are tired and not well rested, so get enough sleep.
