Why is healthy food so expensive?
Topic: Why is healthy food so expensive?
November 23, 2019 / By Sarina Question:
I go to school and have an apartment so I cannot really afford a healthy diet.lately its been things like 34 cent mac and cheese 70 cent block of cheese and 70 cent bread. I used to eat really healthy and felt good when I was able to afford it. I am also a vegetarian. Whole wheat is more expensive than white bread which doesnt make any sense to me. I could only afford to eat once a day. Now im on my own and its harder to do because I have more bills. Ok well my question is, does any one know any cheap, healthy vegetarian food I can eat? or a website that delivers organic vegetarian food for good prices? Excuse me if the grammar is awful, its 2:45 am here.

Yes, some whole grain products are more expensive (bread, pasta), but you can offset this by buying cheap, healthy foods, like rolled oats (not instant- yuk!), generic cheerios or bran cereal (cheaper than sugar-laden cereal), beans, brown rice, milk, plain yogurt, eggs, peanut butter, frozen vegetables (better for you than fresh), fresh apples, bananas, lettuce, cabbage, and carrots. You're already saving money by not buying meat. Soy "milk" is expensive, it's not really milk at all and is loaded with sugar. I don't do "organic"-not worth the hugely inflated cost. Do you have an Aldi nearby? the ww bread is 99 cents, only a little more than the white, and the rest of their items are cheap too. .

Because the ingredients in the unhealthy food are so cheap they're actually cheaper than the healthy stuff.
In the past fruit & vegetables always used to be cheaper than animal products, but thanks to some modern inhumane intensive farming methods and new methods of carcass processing (for example "mechanically recovered/separated meat" etc) its very cheap to get a bit of animal on your plate these days.
What part of that animal though is another question (its not even technically meat most of the time), but when its all processed into a nice nondescript paste which is then cooked up in a shape with some flavourings & additives etc people don't seem to really care!
But yeah. I know farming, i know food factory work. I've lived/worked in both and i've done a lot of research on these matters too, and long story short my advice is: Save your pennies up for the better quality healthier food and avoid such processed foods (chicken nuggets, cheap sausage meat, burgers etc) like the plague! You'll be doing your health a big favour- its not just gross & fattening a lot of what they put in junk/fast food, there are major concerns over the long term health implications over a lot of the other things they add to food.
I know the feeling, I have to eat a gluten free diet, and everything cost so much. I like to go to trader joe's for foods that are healthy and don't cost too much. There is also a fresh and easy market. It's new to my neighborhood, so I haven't been there yet, but I hear it is affordable. Other tings you can do is buy more frozen or canned foods, I know it takes away some of the vitamins but you will still get plenty. You can also try farm fresh to you, it's online and they deliver. I would not say they are cheap but maybe it will help.

Avoid prepackaged foods, including the ones that are "healthy" and vegetarian. They are much more expensive than preparing the food yourself. Eat plenty of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, and experiment with different sandwich toppings. Anytime I go on a meatless kick my favorite is lettuce and cheese with mayonnaise. Also, check out some cook books from the library especially ones geared towards students. There are several that are particularly good for vegetarian students that have quick meals, are easy and cheap, and make only one or two servings. Also, meatless spaghetti is excellent. And when you buy fruits or vegetables, only buy a few so that they won't go bad and you don't end up wasting your money.

Well try not to buy those "Jenny Craig" diet plans or programs because they are obviously trying to scam you for money. Eating healthy does not mean eating expensive, simple choices like reading the back of a label can help you determine whether a product is good enough to eat. Canned food (especially fruit) is incredibly cheap and preserves many of the nutrients in it, some people stride away from it because they correlate price with quality (which is false). Most scientists will say that there is no conclusive evidence between eating organic, and that normal veggies and fruits are perfectly fine for you. I know it is difficult to live the lifestyle you want but making rational decisions will definitely help you get there.

buy whole and canned foods in bulk when on sale. learn to make your own bread (home made bread is cheap and soooo much better, you can find a bread machine for cheap/free on Craig's list or FreeCycle if you don't want to make it by hand). in summer go to farmers markets and buy in season foods by the bushel and learn how to can and freeze them.
Get some good vegetarian cook books.
If you have a west or south facing balcony or yard/patio get some pots and soil and plant a container garden. You can easily grow most herbs in containers as well as tomatoes, peppers, lettuce, kale, etc.. Even growing just 2 or 3 things can save you lots of money.

Expensive since it need more stages, treatments etc. that need more times, labors, means and ultimately cost to prepare it.
My suggestions is slightly lower your standar for food quality appropriately and increase your exercises and drink more fresh water.

I dont mean to come across as rude but to put it simply, if it is truly IMPORTANT ENOUGH to you, then you will find a way to afford it. You cant put a price tag on your health.

I'm sure you've heard about this amazing fruit called the acai berry with "mystical" weight loss qualities that help you lose weight fast, the natural way.
However, combined with proper diet and exercise, the acai berry can be an excellent weight loss aid. Its natural combination of antioxidants, essential fatty acids, amino acids, phytosterols, and amino acids work together to help your body function better, process food easier, and burn fat more efficiently. Let’s break down how the acai berry helps people reach their perfect weight…
The acai berry contains Omega fatty acids – the same medically recommended fats found in fish oil, olive oil and flaxseed. These fatty acids can’t be produced by the body, and must be obtained from the food we eat. Instead of being stored as fat, they are used by the liver to “kick-start” the metabolism. If you’re a slow starter when it comes to losing weight, or if you’ve reached the frustrating “plateau” phase of weight loss, adding some form of acai to your diet might be just the ticket to get over the hump.
The acai berry contains a generous amount of fiber which promotes a healthy digestive system and helps cleanse your system of fatty foods.
As mentioned above, the acai berry has a generous amount of fiber. High fiber foods like acai help you to feel fuller faster and cut down on nagging cravings, needless snacking, and late night trips to the refrigerator.
Final Word on Acai Berry & Weight Loss
Although it’s not the miracle weight loss solution that some claim, the acai berry has been medically and scientifically proven to contain ingredients that aid in weight loss. Not only does it provide a valuable boost to the metabolism, it also suppresses appetite, helps build muscle, and gives a much-needed shot of energy and stamina for those fat blasting workouts.
