Question: I am 14 I am 5 4" I am 95 pounds At school, someone came in and used some wierd tools to "pinch our fat". My body fat percentage was only 5% I am quite skinny but I didn't know that my body fat percentage was that low I consider myself in good shape endurance wise My maximum strength/muscle mass could use some work though I am playing ice hockey at the moment I eat a lot of food What is wrong Is this abnormal? I'm male

The amount of body fat you carry, your body fat percentage, makes a difference to your body shape and your health. Your shape is affected by body fat percentage because muscle tissue is more compact than fat - a balloon containing 1lb of muscle tissue would be smaller than a balloon containing 1lb of fat! So a woman, 5' 6" tall weighing 140lbs (10 stone) who does regular muscle enhancing exercise, will have a lower body fat percentage, and look slimmer, than a woman of the same height and weight who doesn't exercise and therefore has a higher ratio of body fat. Measuring changes in body fat percentage, rather than just measuring changes in weight, can be very motivational when you're dieting - especially if you are exercising as part of your Weight Loss regime. How body fat is measured Bioelectrical Impedance Until fairly recently, measuring body fat percentage required the help of professionals. Bioelectrical Impedance technology means that body fat monitors are now easy to operate and available for home use. A very low level electrical signal is sent through the body - normally by standing on sensors on a body fat monitor. The signal travels quickly through lean tissue, which has a high percentage of water and is therefore a good conductor of electricity, and more slowly through fat, as fat has a lower percentage of water and is therefore a poor conductor of electricity. Bioelectrical Impedance devices use the information from this signal to work out body fat percentage. Tanita offer a range of body fat monitors / scales for use at home Skinfold Measurements This method involves a skinfold caliper to pinch predetermined sites on the body. The tongs pinch the skin, pulling the fat away from the muscles and bones. A gauge on the calipers measures the thickness of that pinch. It is recommended that this test is carried out by a professional and should be repeated to verify measurements. To make the test reliable you should not exercise beforehand. Exercise makes your blood travel to your skin to help you cool down and this causes the skin to swell, making your test inaccurate. Hydrostatic Weighing Tanks This method is the most accurate but also the most uncomfortable. You sit on a scale in a large tank of water and blow all the air out of your lungs, then submerge yourself in the water completely. You stay underwater for 5 seconds, while your underwater weight is recorded. You have to make sure no air is trapped in your lungs, otherwise the test will be inaccurate and your results will make you appear fatter. Infrared Interactance This technique involves a different coloured light, which is shone onto the skin surface at selected areas. The spectrum of the wavelengths reflected is analysed by computer. The lean : fat ratio at the test areas can be calculated as fat and lean tissue have different interactive spectra. This method is not recommended because researchers have found prediction errors. I have never known anyone to idolize anorexia, so I really don't know what you are talking about with that comment. In any event, nor do I see any idolizing of fat people. There is, however, a Dove (the soap manufacturer) campaign that uses models that are not model thin, but women who not size 0, 1, 2, 3 or 4. I am curious to see where the trend of idolizing fat people is. Can you provide your resources?

They used what are called body fat calipers. More reliable than using only a tape measure, or bmi, etc and more cost effective than other methods. You being an athletic man at 5% body fat is in the essential fat category. Is it normal? no many people in the world are obese. Is it bad in this category? no. Male body builders older than you are compete in such low body fat percentages. Is it bad to stay in that category for long term? yes. It is possible to have not enough fat; which is why it is called essential fat. People lose strength and endurance at essential fat levels but health problems come up when you go below it. Be cautious.

this is a horrible diet and you are at least 10 pounds UNDERweight. Why are you trying to kill yourself? Heres a better way to eat: Breakfast: Cook oatmeal or health food store cereal in water with wheat bran. Make a pot of it on weekends and nuke 1/2 cup each morning. Then stir in low fat milk or yogurt, banana, walnuts and berries. Drink hot Ovaltine. Breakfast should be your largest meal of the day to raise blood sugar level which falls during the night. Lunch: Egg, tuna or turkey ½ sandwich on multi-grain (not just whole wheat) bread with bean or alfalfa sprouts, yogurt, fresh fruit. If you had meat loaf for dinner, bring a meat loaf sandwich on whole grain bread (NO mayo). On cold days, a squatty thermos of hot chili, split peas with ham, or beef stew. Snacks: Fresh (not canned) fruit. Nothing ever from a vending machine. Fruit smoothies (frozen thawed fruit, yogurt, banana) Dinner: salad with white meat chicken and fresh (not canned) veggies: tomatoes, 2 kinds of lettuce, 2 kinds of shredded cabbage, shredded or sliced carrots, alfalfa or bean sprouts, zucchini, green or red peppers, hard boiled eggs, brussels sprouts, broccoli, cauliflower, tofu, cottage cheese, spinach...Instead of dressing, squeeze 1/4 tomato over it. Or homemade bean/vegetable soups; great way to recycle leftovers. Or grilled fish with steamed veggies. Or omelet: In blender, whip together eggs, tofu, cottage cheese, onions, garlic powder. Cook with mushrooms, chopped tomatoes and green or red peppers. Avoid junk food, fast foods, anything from a vending machine, gluten, pastries, desserts, syrup (even canned fruit in syrup), peanut butter, fat/grease (pork, wieners, chops, bacon, salami, pizza, chips, fries), pasta, potatoes, ramen, popcorn, white bread, rice, canned veggies, ice cream (it’s lard + chemicals), chips, tobacco, alcohol (damages brain).coffee (carcinogenic). no oil except olive and mac nut. Sodas (loaded with toxins; leads to stroke, obesity, kidney damage, high BP), anything with sugar (cancer cells feed on sugar, it wreaks havoc on your liver, mucks up metabolism, impairs brain function, makes you more susceptible to heart disease and diabetes), To keep your skin clear, drink water, tea, veggie juice, unsweetened fruit juice. Join a gym; they have all the equipment and staff to show you how to use it to get the look you want to achieve, but you have to ask them. Much cheaper than buying your own equipment. Go hiking, biking, jogging, bowling, swimming, rowing, jump rope, play tennis, badminton, volleyball, soccer, jumping jacks, lift weights, trampoline? To tone your tummy, do sit ups, push ups, pull ups, leg lifts, butt raises and crunches. For more energy, take Super B complex.
