Any tricks for a constipated cat?
Topic: Any tricks for a constipated cat?
July 21, 2019 / By Seymour Question:
I have a 3 yr old cat that is constipated... I have been giving him some Lactulose and the vet recently prescribed some Cisapride (Propulside), but he has been taking it for 5 days now, and it has not helped one bit! Any tricks I could try? I have read about pretrolleum jelly and pumpkin, but have not tried them... has anyone?
note: I will bring him to the vet again this week and try to learn how to give enemas since the vet bills are adding up!

I give my cats wet food and dry food and I don't have any issues. I've had cats all my life. I would give him JUST wet cat food for NOW. Generally it will keep him from getting constipated and give him the furball remedy regularly, it has stuff in it that will also help keep him regular. Another thing is to use mineral oil. A bit of mineral oil goes A LONG WAY. either add it to his water or mix it in his wet food for MORE immediate results. you don't need much, for a small bowl of water, maybe a teaspoon...pending the amount of wet food he eats, just a few dribbles..also put some on a qtip (and , he may not like this, rub some on his hiney and a bit inside his hiney to help moisten his skin and hopefully make it a little less painful when his bowels do move).
I would research on the net for other homemade remedies for this, it may be as simple as a certain type of suppository over the counter. I would read up on it first. But I can tell you, mineral oil works!!! You just can't give it to him straight and he sounds like he needs some relief right away.
Another thought, for a human who needs help, outside of enimas and mineral oil, and if he is not too impacted to where it hurts, massage his belly and his "area" to help loosen it up and pass. CNAs have to do that for certain clientele.
But mineral oil is generally fast acting as long as he is not so impacted he'll still want to eat. Get him some purina super supper or something like that and just give him some on a spoon after you mixed it up with some drops of mineral oil. Warning, if he has too much mineral oil over time, he'll be flatulent and squirting and making a mess, lol. But right now you need to get him going! Once he starts having regular movements again, give him some wet food in the morning and at night (not a whole can full) in addition to some dry food. I give my cat Meow mix indoor cat formula dry food because he doesn't get the nutrients from the sun he needs to get it from somewhere.
In addition, your vet shouldn't keep charging you. that's awful, my vet doesn't do that. I would check into getting another vet. Mine tells me certain over the counter stuff for various issues unless he needs to be seen and needs an antibiotic. I also had a teacup chihuahua who could not have his shots all at once, i had to split it up in 3-4 different trips and he immediately stated he wouldn't charge me for the visits but just charge me for the vaccines. He loves animals and is not about money! YOU need a new vet!

By the way, the chihuahua does work, only be sure that the dog is the opposite sex of the person who is in need of the chihuahua.
We had one for my brother and she would sleep with us, her head on a pillow just like we did. Whenever C would get ill and his was really bad, the dog, Blonde would get sick and then he'd be alright, the dog would soon be better, she lived to a ripe old age for a dog.

Vasoline won't help if the cat has been on the other two at this point. Does the vet have Enulose? That's pretty good at getting things started again.
The pumpkin (which most cats won't eat) holds fiber and water, getting it to the intestines to keep things moving, but the oils medications do a better job.
Ask the vet if there's a blockage inside--we went through the trauma of loosing one of our cats in December to a tumor growing on the underside of her hip bone, it was close to 2" long and eventually had just blocked all poop from coming out--they didn't know why till an autopsy was done. An ultrasound would have found it, but they were treating for everything BUT the real cause.

If she is constantly constipated then i would get a vet to have a look at her before attempting home remedies, you say she is on persian cat diet so obviously she is long haired, and hair balls can cause constipation in cats, when my cat had this problem when she was elderly(15)the vet gave her liquid paraffin which worked on first use,it turned out to be hair balls causing her problem, as she could no longer bring them up they were going the other way causing constipation, and sometimes either liquid paraffin or the preparatory bulk food additives available as granules from most chemists, these work within 24-48 hours, but i wouldn't until she has been seen to find the cause of her constipation as she is elderly its wise to get her checked, and sometimes enema's need to be given by the vet and in rare cases surgery.

Miralax works really well and that will treat the problem. Want the provlem not reoccur? Stop feeding kitty crack aka dry food.
Nutrition since there are so many bad things out there is very important to your cat’s health
Contrary to what you may have heard; dry foods are not a great thing to feed a cat.
Please read the label on what you are feeding? What are the ingredients? Do you know what they mean? Is the first ingredient a muscle meat like chicken or meal or other things?
Dry foods are the number 1 cause of diabetes in cats as well as being a huge contributing factor to kidney disease, obesity, crystals, u.t.i’s and a host of other problems. Food allergies are very common when feeding dry foods. Rashes, scabs behind the tail and on the chin are all symptoms
The problems associated with Dry food is that they are loaded with carbohydrates which many cats (carnivores) cannot process them. Also, Most of the moisture a cat needs is suppose to be in the food but in
Dry, 95% of it is zapped out of dry foods in the processing. Another thing, most use horrible ingredients and don't use a muscle meat as the primary ingredient and use vegetable based protein versus animal. Not good for an animal that has to eat meat to survive.
You want to pick a canned food w/o gravy (gravy=carbs) that uses a muscle meat as the first ingredient and doesn't have corn at least in the first 3 ingredients if at all. Fancy feast is a middle grade food with 9lives, friskies whiskas lower grade canned and wellness and merrick upper grade human quality foods. The optimum food to feed cats has no grains whatsoever, cats have no use for them and many have trouble processing them as well as the carbs. IBD is another disease that is rapidly becoming common amoung cats because of the inappropriate diets being fed.
Also, dry food is not proven to be better for teeth. Does a hard pretzel clean your teeth or do pieces of it get stuck? http://www.felinefuture.com/nutrition/bp...
Please read about cat nutrition.

Water will help you poop, but that's not all you need. Fiber is nature's broom, it goes through your system and drags all the gunk with it. Junk food doesn't have much fiber in it. You can eat fruit, a lot of fruit to help you go. Not fruit roll ups, you need the flesh. Apples, oranges, pears, kiwi, eat fresh fruit. Fiber powder can help if you find some around the house, one glass is fine. Sure fire way to poop is to eat prunes, drink prune juice, or drink watermelon juice. Do not go for the stimulant type laxatives unless you really have to, they cause uncomfortable cramping. Also, do not strain to get it out if you can help it, relax and let it come out when it is ready. Another thing you can do: exercise helps get things moving, even just walking around rather than sitting.
