how can i help my constipated preemie?
Topic: how can i help my constipated preemie?
May 22, 2019 / By Jehosaphat Question:
I have 38 week preemie twins, born at 34 1/2 weeks. My boy twin has suddenly become constipated. He pushes and pushes until he turns purple and nothing. if i use a q-tip and vasoline or warm water he pushes and a little bit comes out (soft, baby poop color) but thats it.he hasn't done anything on his own in 7 1/2 days. My girl twin once a day easily. both eat the same enfacare formula and breastmilk, about 4 bottles of each a day each at 2 ounces a time. Doc says to sit and wait,he isn't in pain, but he is totally uncomfortable, cries when he pushes, turns purple, and now is not finishing his bottles? Help.... He weighs 6lbs.

If it is soft he is not constipated. Constipation is when the stool is hard like little pebbles. Pooping is a new skill for him and he needs how to learn to use the muscles to push. The only thing you are doing by doing what you are doing is potentially causing him great harm. Your doctor has given you very accurate advice, but if you don't trust him you should get a second opinion.

I know this may sound a little crazy but if your dog is constipated she can eat a little canned pumpkin. it is kinda like a natural laxative. I do not recommend suppositories at all. How ever you can use a stool softener.they usually come in the form of a gel cap. The active ingredient you are looking for is Ducosate Sodium. We use this all the time at the Vet clinic I work at.
You need to see another doctor. My three year old twin girl has had constipation problems since she was six months. Her poops were always soft just very large and still are large. Our doctor did not blow us off at all, my twins were born at 33.6 days and were in the NICU until they were 37wks. In the NICU, if they didn't have a BM in two days the nurses and doctors were on top of coming up with a solution. A baby that doesn't have a good BM for seven days could be impacted, please do not take him to the same doctor. Another answer stated constipation was small pebble like poop but this is false. When you can not go you are constipated. Having small pebble poop is a dehydration problem that leads to a constipation problem...With your baby being so young and a preemie I wouldn't suggest anything until you take him to a good doctor. Using a Q-tip or Vasoline is not suppose to be used as an everyday solution. Please, Please, Please take him to another doctor

STOP STICKING A Q-TIP IN HIS BOTTOM AND DON'T GIVE YOUR BABY ANYTHING LIKE KAYRO SYRUP...THAT CAUSES DANGEROUSLY HIGH BLOOD SUGAR.
That is why he wont poop. Some parents get obsessed with the pooping and what they don't understand is that you are MAKING THE PROBLEM WORSE. It only takes a few days for your baby to become "stimulant dependent" that means your baby won't poop unless someone sticks something up it's bottom.
A baby can go 72 hours without pooping (not 10 days like some idiot doctors tell parents) and that is Ok....If you are only doing 4 bottles each day, 2 oz each, and that is ALL your baby is getting, I can tell you without a doubt in my mind that the cause is DEHYDRATION.
Your babies should be feeding EVERY 4 HOURS AROUND THE CLOCK. Your babies are not feeding enough.
So, start feeding them more and stop the q-tips. Listen to your doctor.

Ok my son has through the same thing. First things first if you don't trust that the doc is doing all they can do go and get a second opinion ( I had too). If he is getting a little out that's soft it could be a blockage and the soft is coming out around it. Is his tummy hard? For now try some dark Karo syrup. Then get a second opinion. My son's new doc gave him a enema then muralax, it took about 6 weeks to fully work but finally he is normal in the pooper. Hope this helps.

Talk to your pediatrician again. Don't sit and worry. If you think he's wrong and he won't help you, switch doctors. You don't have to let your baby be in pain.

Some things such as narcotics, antidepressants and other medications can cause nearly constant constipation. Some women have constipation every month associated with their period. For some people, "normal" may be going once every 2 or 3 days. Once a day isn't normal for everyone.
