Would the weight gain stop at a point while on Efexor (Effexor)?

Would the weight gain stop at a point while on Efexor (Effexor)? Topic: Would the weight gain stop at a point while on Efexor (Effexor)?

Question: Hi there, I have been on Efexor 4 months ago and my weight increases like a rocket. Initially, at the beginning of the the efexor, I LOST 6 pounds in a month. Later, the weight has been increased 20 pounds within 3 months. Since I have been on Seroquel and Trittico (trazodone), my dr asked me to get off seroquel. Now I am only on Trazodone 25mg and Efexor 37.5mg. I have anxiety and sleep trouble, they help me to a great extent. I tried two days without Efexor and I could hardly sleep. Now my question is: 1) would the weight gain stop at a point while on Efexor (my dr already explained that Efexor did change the metabolism which induces weight gain)? 2) Anyone tried doing a lot of exercise and can get rid of those increased pounds while on Efexor? Please don't tell me to stick on healthy diet as I already did eat a lot less and eat healithy. Someone in the dark.

Hi Although I don't have an answer to your question, I feel such relief to have seen it. I have been taking venlafaxine (Efexor) for over 4 years now. I began, slowly to gain weight. I had read from information given with this drug that weight chance is one of the side effects. As gaining weight started ot affect my life, my ability to walk, which changes your life completely. I felt I needed to ask doctor if I could change my prescription. To cut to the chase, after asking several times the only answer I ever get is that "there is no feed back that indicates weight gain by taking this drug". Also, they go back to the fact that I was initially prescribed Efexor by mental health services, that this appears to be the the best drug for me. This is why I am so very pleased to see your question. I feel that I am not just a "silly" person asking for a change of my medication. I now realise I am right. I will now, next time I see my GP I will ask to change once again... I take 225mg Venlafaxine (Efexor) daily, have been for over 4 years... For a while, I tried not to eat anything other than fish and salads. Made no difference at all. As for exercise, how are we suffering from depression ever to feel able to do that, as along with our illness we have gained so much weight, excercise becomes so much more difficult... Yes this drug has helped with my sleep problems, yet if there was someone to give enought time to all problems, I feel sure there would be a more appropriate medication. One that my suit our metabolism, therefore NO weight gain,,, Once agian just want to say how thankful I am to see your question.... Sylvie

I gained a lot of weight with my first child too, I weighed 97 pounds ant the beginning of my pregnancy, I was 250 when I delivered, and they could not figure out a reason why. I have had two more kids, the only way that I could loose weight was by constantly working out and really watching what I eat. I am now around 175 but I am pregnant again, I just still watch what I eat and I am trying to not over indulge.

exercise more and eat less, walking is very good exercise for you trazodone is an antidepressant that sedates some as a side effect and so now is popular as a sleeping pill I wouldnt take trazodone unless it helps with sleep as it may react with the effexor antidepressants of all types dont cause weight gain or loss, its just a fable

Usually the side effects of meds like these will diminish after a while...but some meds such as Effexor and Seroquil make you want to eat a lot. Exercise is always good and should help with depression too. But everybody is different. Good Luck!

Yes. The main reason why you eat is to obtain energy in the form of food. When your body breaks food down, it takes the energy out of there and converts it into a form that your cells can use. When you don't eat enough, your body breaks down its fat and eventually protein for energy. When you eat more than you need, your body stores that energy as fat. Your body needs energy to do anything. You need energy to walk, run and swim. In fact, if you stayed in bed all day and did nothing you would still need quite a bit of energy because your body uses it to breathe, blink, and even for things that you can't even hear, feel or see happening, like your cells dividing and making new cells. Or things like that. However, your body needs more than just energy. Like, it needs water, vitamins, salts, etc. You get these from your food too. So don't just abandon food or anything. You need it. If you want to lose weight, go jogging every day and then eat healthy, nutritious food.
