Question: Okay, wait a second. I'm sorry that I didn't make myself clear. I just meant ways to do things for your dog that are not as expensive. For instance, this past winter I bought a toddler's sleeveless fleece jacket for my dog at a garage sale for about $2 instead of paying a lot for a dog jacket. Right now I am freezing water in a butter bowl and putting that out so that my dogs will have cool water for the couple of hours I am gone in the morning. Someone suggested putting A SMALL amount of garlic powder in their food to ward off fleas. Stuff like that, not the serious stuff that they really need the vet for.

ok, as long as you're not talking about medical needs here! I buy childrens clothes.. I shop at the discount rack tho. Sometimes things may need slightly altered.. but I found many cute little t's for under $3... considering many dog t's can cost over $5 each! Instead of buying expensive poop bags, I just use plastic grocery bags... I already have plenty after going shopping anyways. Dog food bags (expecially the large ones) are great for cleaning poop from your yard, and for cleaning up other yard debris.. they are sturdier bags and dont fall apart easily. coolwhip and butter bowls are fine to use. I prefer stainless steel as they are easier to clean.. but those type of bowls are great for outside or to take on car rides. Those big ice-cream buckets are great too. my hairless dog needs special skin care. I found its cheaper to make my own sugar scrub instead of buying one. All I need is sugar, and either olive or almond oil. For treats, I use green-beans. Fred LOVES them.. and they are also healthier than many of the treats that are fatty. I have a hairless dog, so I dont have much concerns with fleas LOL.. I keep the cats INSIDE tho so they dont pick up fleas.. it would cost about $20 a month just to keep 2 cats treated for fleas! (plus I dont have to worry about them getting hit by car, shot, poisoned, etc)

Many of us in rescue have learned of some alternatives to keep our animals healthy. But NOT without guidance from our vet and years of seeing sick animals and recognizing the symptoms and signs of a problem. No proper care is "cheap". A concerned vet may offer less expensive options to treat a condition to their established clients such as a rescue/shelter. Some meds can be ordered from companies like Foster/Smith, 1-800-PetMeds, etc. Some will require a valid prescription from vet. Using the wrong meds/products could be deadly. It is unfortunate that vet care has gotten to be "big business" and too many vets are way too greedy at the risk of a pet's health. Make it hard for even the best pet owners to provide needed care, especially emergency situations.

There are a lot of things you can do to save money. You can give your own vaccinations except rabies. Wormers and other medications can be bought mail order. Effective flea treatments like frontline and advantage can be bought without going to the vet. You can learn basic first aid and do your own grooming. Garlic won't repel fleas. It will give your dog garlic breath and can make him anemic just like onions. Kennel owners do all these things to keep costs down but we also know when to get professional help.

There are a couple books that were written by holistic vets you may want to get. They contain a lot of good info for those little everyday problems that pop up but don't require a trip to the vet. "The Nature of Animal Healing" by Martin Goldstein, DVM "Holistic Guide for a Healthy Dog" by Wendy Volhard and Kerry Brown, DVM.

Your poor puppy and you to have all of that going on along with going to a new home. Tapeworms are one of the hardest parasites to get rid of because the head latches onto the inside of the intestines. Because the drugs used to treat parasites do sometimes have side-effects such as nausea and because they are chemical based, frequent use can negatively affect your pet’s immune system, and therefore people look for alternatives for their four legged friends. There are LOTS of natural home remedies that you can purchase or put together, I've added some links below. Ingredients to look for: Wormwood (Artemisia absinthinium), Cloves (Eugenia caryophyllata), Neem (Azadirachta indica), Herb of Grace (Ruta graveolens), and green Black walnut hulls (Juglans nigra) Make sure your entire home is completely free of any flea infestations as that is how one of the ways for reinfections occurs. Good luck to you and your puppy. NMP
