Question: I know I need protein zink B12 iron n stuff but Mum says I should have tined tuna I don't feel really veggy when I have it though. Will having fish oil tablets make me not a vegetarian? how can I replace it?

B12 is only found in the feces of animals. So, if you are not eating the intestines of cows (ie: hot dogs) ... or live in Sterile American environment with FDA checks to make sure that we Americans get zero feces in our food. (Kind of a good thing, eh? no E Coli bacteria to make us sick? well. it depends on how you look at it.) B12 deficiency is mostly a myth now. CEREALS (like Cheerios) are fortified with vitamin B12. Otherwise most Americans might not get vitamin B12, not just vegans... National Public Radio (paid for by listeners, like me, NOT necessarily the Government supported. In fact, the government tends to be more conservative, NPR is very liberal, in most people's opinions)> NPR speaks of how we (Americans) could benefit from more stomach gut bacteria, like Mexicans or other lesser developed nations. My hippie happy hunting organic free range parents always try to make me an omnivore again. : ( : ( They also garden. Which cultivates my interest in vegan foods... : ) Always listen to your parents, unfortunately, you are under 18yrs and live under their roof with their rules. I'm so sorry. I had to eat meat as a child too. I heard that shrimp and tuna were given a HUGE harvest with no limits prior to the gulf oil spill clean up... so, it's still safe, most likely.

Beans & rice are a complete protein. For instance you can go to a Mexican restaurant have a taco, but request beans & rice in it along with the veggies. I do that all the time. I explicitly say "no meat" then they "get it." I buy a mix by "Fantastic" for making tacos at home without meat. I make it as the box states, then add in a small jar of Chi Chi's "taco sauce." It's wonderful! http://www.fantasticfoods.com/ Also here is my smoothie recipe - I have this several times a week for breakfast or at "brunch" time: 1 small banana 1/3 semi-frozen berries of your choice (like rasp & blueberries) Splash of OJ (like a shot glass full only) or cranberry juice 2 or 3 ice cubes One scoop of GeniSoy Ultra XT Vanilla Protein Shake powder (it's good when vanilla) Approx. 6 oz. Vanilla organic yogurt (like Stonyfield brand) Blend that very well til all the ice is crushed uniformly. Enjoy! http://www.genisoy.com/item.jsp?item=004... Most large stores have an "organic" section. Soups with lentils and beans in them are very healthy. Also we like Red Roasted Hummus on whole wheat organic crackers - delicious and great source of protein. I will eat organic chicken and fish - but if I can't find organic I won't eat it. It's just my personal preference. I also eat organic eggs and sometimes milk. You got a lot of good answers but remember if you eat beans for protein they must be combined with a grain to complete the amino acids(e.g. beans and rice, beans and cornbread). A good reference book is "Diet For a Small Planet".

You don't need to eat fish. Everything beneficial that can be found in fish can be found in other foods. I learned that from a book ("Becoming Vegan"), but if you do the research yourself and show it to your mom, hopefully she'll leave you alone. (And to play devil's advocate for a minute, if you mom thinks you should eat fish, tinned tuna is not the way to go, wild salmon is.) Also, pretty much all fish these days has mercury in it, which is really terrible for human health.

Well fish oil is pretty much the same as having fish so if you're looking for omega 3's and things like that try eating different types of nuts (walnuts are good),eggs,fortified margarine,cereral and milk or soy milk. You can also try flaxseed oil or eat avocado's or use avocado oil and sunflower seeds and sunflower oil!

Yes, vegetarian is extremely unhealthy for dogs. So why don't you buy him a high quality, dry food that has MEAT as the first ingredient? A good quality dry food does NOT cause a dry coat - especially if you give enough salmon oil daily, nor does it cause upset stomachs. The only problem would be if you feed as crappy quality food that has a lot of cheap fillers - corn and wheat are the worst - that are hard for dogs to digest and a major cause of food allergies. And when you transition to a new food, it needs to be done gradually since an abrupt change in food causes diarrhea.
