I got a puppy for christmas, help me:(? Topic: I got a puppy for christmas, help me:(?

Question: My parents got me a puppy for christmas, I'm very happy and hes so cute but heres the problem. It has way to much energy for me, and hes going to be enormous. Also, hes already showing agression over food and hes only 4 months old. He bit me last night and drew blood. My parents really want to keep him, but I don't want him if hes going to bit me. The breed of dog that I really wanted was a small dog, like a miniature dachshund. I don't know what to do. :( Also, they said that if this one goes, I cannot get the breed of dog that I really wanted All of you that say, puppys bite, its what they do. This is not teething. He actually lunges at me when i walk past his bowl, and he growls and barks like a maniac if i try and go near him. When i went to pick he bowl up, he attached himself to my hand, and wouldnt get off. And i just dont know what to say to my parents. He is a treeing walker coonhound, basically a giant beagle. He is going to be a bout 50 cms tall, and 85 pounds.

When he's eating try hovering by him & drop a few of his favorite treats into his food bowl - this should make him associate you with good things & stop the aggression whilst he is eating. Also when giving him his food make him sit or lie down & WAIT to eat it until you give a signal. This kind of behaviour will help establish you as pack leader. You could also ask (tell!) your parents to feed him themselves or help train him as they brought the dog not you & as you still are a minor the dog should be a shared responsibility with their help. Good luck - I'm sure you'll learn to love this dog as much as you ever would any other - if you truly wanted a dog then you would be happy with this one, coonhounds are a lovely breed too.

i got a puppy too and she is just 3 months, they are all crazy at that age, this one already tore apart one of my little sisters dolls, and she is very hyper. I think you should keep him and just try to train him, if he keeps on showing aggression towards you once he is older then try looking forward into taking him to an animal shelter..but give the pup a chance..:]]

That is a tough one because, obviously you said this dog has too much energy for you. So give it to the animal shelter, and you can find a smaller dog at the shelter while you are there.

All puppys are agrressive and he bit you because thats what puppys do... give him some time ...... get him some chew toys...... and when he bites you think of it as love nibbles and tell him "easy" ..... so he wont hurt you

Sounds like your parents got a dog they wanted instead of what you were requesting. My motto has always been: "A tired dog is a happy owner". You say he has too much energy, well he's a puppy, get him lots of exercise. Show him games and make sure he runs as much as possible. As for the biting, well that is something all dogs must be taught not to do. You need to sit down with your parents and ask them to help you train the dog. Maybe enroll in a puppy obedience class. The trainer will answer any questions you have and you will be able to understand how to better train you pup. I'm sorry it's not the pup you wanted, but just try to make the best out of it. When he is properly trained, you will probably not remember you wanted another breed.
