Question: This isn't for me but a friend. Yesterday she blurted out that she wanted to try and lose weight by using laxatives. She said she was going to take 4 a day for 25 days and see what happens. I don't like the idea. I keep trying to tell her not to, but she keeps saying that I don't know what im talking about. And its true... I don't know what im talking about, thats why I need you to help me back up what im trying to say. Please help. Im worried about her. Thank-you, but I must add that she is only 14. I know she will probably lose weight with the 'laxatives' but im not sure how much would be water weight. I just want to make it clear to her that it isn't healthy. Please keep the answers coming they are helping. Thankyou :-) She ISNT over weight. I keep trying to tell her that, shes around my height and build... so, going by me. Im 125lb and 5'4, im happy the way I am! Why can't she. How much weight will she lose if she does this, and how much weight will she put on afterwards? Because if she finds out its more than what she loses she will probably stop, but I need to know so I can tell her. Thankyou

It's a very bad idea, and it's one that leads down a slippery slope. Here's what will happen: she will lose a lot of weight. The scale will show good numbers. however, it will be mostly water weight. She will begin to notice that she is more tired than usual. This is because her body is being forced to digest food before nutrients are taken in. Not to be gross, but, basically, poop is made out of stuff from food that your body can't use. The good stuff is absorbed into the body for energy. Laxatives rush the digestive process. Thus, the good stuff comes out with the bad. She won't have energy to do much, she won't think clearly. And then her skin and hair will start to look disgusting. her skin will be dry, irritated and ashy. Her hair will not be very shiny. The entire time she takes laxatives, she will feel hungry but her stomach will ache and be VERY crampy. If she can ignore the pain, she will eat more than usual. But still lose weight... When she stops taking the laxatives, she will GAIN weight. She will weigh more than she does now. This is because she got used to eating so much. And, because her own metabolism is slowed. It is used to the extra "push" the laxatives provide, and sort of forgets how to digest on its own. It will take many weeks to work itself out. And again, she will weigh more than now. While she lost the weight, she didn't learn how to eat and exercise well. This is why diets fail. unless you do things sensibly, in a way you can live with FOREVER, the weight loss won't last.

Your body can become dependent on laxatives - meaning that your colon becomes "lazy" and when you stop taking them it doesn't work as it should - and she may go through a period of bowel problems. Not to mention that she won't be getting the nutrition of the food that goes through - she'd be better off use Alli - (which will cause diarrhea) but is a diet supplement. Eating less, exercising more and drinking lots of water will give her better results in the long run - Cut out all carbs (bread, pasta, cereal,etc) and sweets and most red meat - and eat fresh veggies and fruits, baked chicken or fish - nothing fried - and she'll lose the weight -

Check the label on the storage container of the laxatives she's planning on taking. There should be health advice there. Failing that, consult a professional. If you're a UK resident, try calling NHS direct.

Bad Idea. Listen to what everyone has said. I think you know that though. Just try and explain other ways of keeping the body healthy. Eating healthy and exercise has got to be better than spending a month on the shitter.
