My Dog is Constipated - help?

My Dog is Constipated - help? Topic: My Dog is Constipated - help?

Question: First of all, my dog is not sick, no vomiting or change in eating habits. Last Tuesday, my dog had to be put under to have one of his teeth pulled. The doctor put him on pain medication, which I have been giving to him. He is also on meds for allergies, but he's had that before with no problem. The pain meds were only supposed to be for a couple of days, but after he too it, he seems really consipated now. I stopped the meds, but is there anything I can do for him now? He had a full blood test and everything is normal, he's eating fine and drinking. I just think the pain medicine made him constipated. The vet is closed over the weekend, but I wanted to ask here for help. I saw him three times trying to 'go' outside today. Any help would be appreciated. Oh, he is a corgi/shepard mix... about 34 pounds.

My vet informed me that Pumpkin is *not* the way to go for all dogs. In some dogs, it can make the problem worse. Instead, a tablespoon of plain yogurt 2-3 times a day is better for many dogs. My assumption would be that the pain meds have made him constipated. The same thing happens in humans. But, you need to call your vet first thing in the AM to get direct advice from *him*. Watch your dog until you can get ahold of the vet and if you see any change in behaviour or mood, get him to an emergency vet ASAP. Look up that info now so that you aren't fumbling for it in an emergency.

I know this may sound a little crazy but if your dog is constipated she can eat a little canned pumpkin. it is kinda like a natural laxative. I do not recommend suppositories at all. How ever you can use a stool softener.they usually come in the form of a gel cap. The active ingredient you are looking for is Ducosate Sodium. We use this all the time at the Vet clinic I work at.

Most dogs pass one or two stools a day. It's not uncommon, though, for a dog to go a day or two without having a bowel movement. As long as the stools are normal in size and pass easily, it's no cause for concern. A common cause of constipation is lack of water, lack of fiber on his diet and it could possibly be the medication he took for his other condition. Here's a link that can give you more information on how to treat and understand dog constipation. hope this helps! http://dogtime.com/constipation.html

Calling your vet in the morning is a good idea... but in the meantime adding some canned pumpkin (NOT pie filling) to his food can help get things moving.

Feed him about half a normal sized can of pumpkin mix. Just mix it in with his food. It works for dogs like prunes work for us. Good luck.

Johnnie Originally Answered: How often do you get constipated?
Some things such as narcotics, antidepressants and other medications can cause nearly constant constipation. Some women have constipation every month associated with their period. For some people, "normal" may be going once every 2 or 3 days. Once a day isn't normal for everyone.
