Is it possible to have Lupus even if on the ANA profile, all of the numbers are low? Topic: Is it possible to have Lupus even if on the ANA profile, all of the numbers are low?

Question: A blood test showed positive for ANA, but on the profile, only one number was slightly high. The SSB was 1.1-1.2 instead of 2. I seem to have several matching symptoms, yet when I finally get to see a Rheumatologist, he tells me that my numbers are too low so he can't help me. Symptoms include: feeling dizzy/ lightheaded Feeling faint and weak, Extreme Fatigue Joint Pain Blurred Vision Inability to concentrate The Doctor didn't seem to take me seriously, even though the only reason I went in after 8 years is because these symptoms are getting worse and affect my day to day life. So, just let me know if Lupus is still diagnosable aside from this test. I don't know specifically the results of the test. This is really all I know. I was, however, told by my doctor that because of the results of my test it was impossible for me to have an auto immune disease. I did sense that he was for some reason uninterested in me though and pushed me out the door right away.

Yes you can, but to me your symptoms don't sound like Lupus.. Anyway, to be diagnosed you need to have 4 or more of the following symptoms 1. Malar rash: butterfly-shaped rash across cheeks and nose 2. Discoid (skin) rash: raised red patches 3. Photosensitivity: skin rash as result of unusual reaction to sunlight 4. Mouth or nose ulcers: usually painless 5. Arthritis (nonerosive) in two or more joints, along with tenderness, swelling, or effusion. With nonerosive arthritis, the bones around joints don’t get destroyed. 6. Cardio-pulmonary involvement: inflammation of the lining around the heart (pericarditis) and/or lungs (pleuritis) 7. Neurologic disorder: seizures and/or psychosis 8. Renal (kidney) disorder: excessive protein in the urine, or cellular casts in the urine 9. Hematologic (blood) disorder: hemolytic anemia, low white blood cell count, or low platelet count 10. Immunologic disorder: antibodies to double stranded DNA, antibodies to Sm, or antibodies to cardiolipin 11. Antinuclear antibodies (ANA): a positive test in the absence of drugs known to induce it. It doesn't seem like you have any really. I wouldn't give up though, you need to find a new doctor who will listen and don't give up until you find one. Good luck! ...

There is no single test can show that you have lupus. Your doctor may have to run several tests and study your medical history. It may take time for the doctor to diagnose Lupus. Lupus isn’t a simple disease with an easy answer. Everyone reacts differently. One person with Lupus may have swollen knees and fever. Another person may be tired all the time or have kidney trouble. If you suspect that you may have some of the early Lupus symptoms, go see a doctor, they will talk to you and take a history of your health problems. It is important that you explain your symptoms. Your history, along with a physical examination and the results of laboratory tests along with the ANA test, helps the doctor decide whether you have Lupus or something else. You may want to keep track of your symptoms and other problems. You should note: * When you experience them? * When you first noticed them? * Also, how often they occur? Regards, Beth
