has anyone gained or lost weight while taking prozac or valium?
Topic: has anyone gained or lost weight while taking prozac or valium?
July 17, 2019 / By Orson Question:
my psychiatrist has me on both and i have gained so much weight (and i was big to start with) and ive tried so many other meds already (all the ssri's plus a few others) and these two meds are the only ones that will work even half way with me, so i HAVE to keep taking them , but i just wanted to know if anyone else gained weight on these particular meds (or lost weight., id LOVE to hear someone actually lost weight on them). i am wondering if its the meds making me gain weight, or just me thats making me gain weight! Please dont waste ur time or mine by saying "go back and talk to ur doctor" b/c i have and we've decided to keep me on these meds. I also know HOW to eat healthy.. i have been, i am doing all the right things... i really think its these medications. So please, my question again is... for those who have been on either one of these meds., have u gained, lost, or stayed the same weight? thank u.

You are correct it is the medication, the Prozac but not the Valium. Unfortunately SSRI's often cause weight gain, often a large amount. Valium could cause weight gain but only if it makes you tired and very inactive. But the drug won't directly cause weight gain and Prozac is so well known for its ability to cause weight gain I would say it is your problem. Occasionally I hear about people losing weight from Prozac but that it almost always because they gained weight due to depression and once feeling better they could easily lose the weight. So like with Valium it is indirect and very rare.
There are a few things to consider. Even reducing the Prozac dose a bit and slightly increasing the Valium might help reduce the weight issue and keep the anxiety under control. And if your anxiety is currently not where you want it to be increasing the Valium a bit is probably a good idea.
You may also consider adding BuSpar (buspirone), which you may have tried already to help with the anxiety for better control and to potentially reduce the Prozac.
One good option would be to add a low dose of Topamax (topiramate). Topamax is an anticonvulsant and it is used for migraine and occasionally for bipolar or anxiety. It is also fairly unique in the fact it causes weight LOSS. So adding a small dose (perhaps 25 mg twice daily) should help negate the effects of the Prozac, you may even lose a bit of weight. The potential downside of Topamax is that it is sedating and some people have very extreme reactions and even 25 mg acts like a sleeping pill. Normally a low dose is fine for most people and it may also help your anxiety a bit.
If you can better control your anxiety it might be good to add a weight loss medication however they are stimulants and tend to cause anxiety. So if your anxiety is not well controlled that might not be a good idea. And even though it may take some time try to get more than just "half way." I bet you can but it may take time and if you are better than half way I bet it will be much easier to lose weight.

I'm not familiar with this particular medicine, but I do know when it comes to many psycho-pharmaceuticals, that some of them can cause weight gain, and it differs among individuals.
For instance, the antidepressant I take is sometimes known for weight gain, as is my mood stabilizer. But I find it quells my appetite and I keep my weight down much better because I'm not as obsessed with food or as hungry. Whenever I have to go off them for something, like a surgery (mine doesn't go well with anesthesia), I find my appetite kicks up.
So, everyone is different in response to different meds.
The thing is, if you find that your weight has kicked up quickly on the med, you have to decide just like any medicine: do the benefits out-weigh the side effects? They all have side effects: fatigue, stomach aches, tired, can't sleep, dizzy, etc.
Only YOU can decide if the weight gain is not worth it to you.
I've gone off probably only 1 med due to weight gain, and a couple due to lack of sexual desire. I was adamant that I would not take any medicine that affected either of those things. You have to be sure of yourself when you talk to your doctor. Some people didn't find that side effect. I can handle a little bit of tiredness. But weight gain and sex problems, no.
I found the book to be very informative and easy to read.
I've lost 17 pounds in 12 days, I'm just concerned that I'm losing too much weight, too quickly. I will admit I haven't followed the guide exactly. I'm not sticking perfectly to the listed foods and meal plans (but mostly) and doing very little exercise, but the weight keeps flying off.
It clearly works and if I'd followed it exactly I think it would scare the living daylights out of me because of the amount that I'd lose. So thanks again for the information. I've never purchased anything like this before because they are usually full of trash, but 3WD has been a pleasant surprise.

I know you want help with what diet pills to use but i would like to suggest trying the detox diet .
Detox diet schedule
On the day (the Friday) that you would be starting the detox program, try and mentally prepare for the weekend ahead and also cut out tea and coffee during the day, and keep have a low protein and low fat breakfast and lunch.
Look at having some cereal for breakfast and a light crispy salad for lunch. Drink only fresh water or herbal tea. You could add 5ml (1 teaspoon) of apple cider vinegar to each glass of water.
For the weekend, decide on one type of fruit to eat the entire weekend - be that cantaloupe, watermelon, apples, pears etc. The best type of fruit to use is a fruit with a high water content - such as watermelon or cantaloupe.
During the detox diet, stick to plain fresh water or herbal tea.
Another drink you could make is to take raw beetroot and to grate it and then to cover the grated beetroot with water. Let the mixture stand for at least 20 minutes, and then strain out the beetroot and keep the water to drink.
The water drawn from this raw beetroot does not taste bad, and is an excellent boost to detoxify your body. Two to three "coverings" of the beetroot can be used, before you need to discard the beetroot and grate some fresh.
Ensure that you drink at least 2 liters (3 pints) of water per day during this period - this is a good habit to keep up with even after the detox period.
Sunday night you can start at supper time to return to normality and a supper of lightly steamed vegetables will do the trick. Try not to use salt, as you may be craving salt at this time.
On Monday morning, you can face the world again with a breakfast of some fruit and cereal and some yogurt - but you may decide after this weekend to continue your detox period for a longer time - even if you are less strict.
If you are able to stay on your one selected fruit for five days, you may be amazed with the results and the way you feel - but in most cases, a five-day stint is far too long for people that are not in the environment of a health hydro.
After your detox plan or diet, the ideal is to make changes to your lifestyle and diet to ensure that you do not over-tax your body with coping with a toxic lifestyle.
I know some people have lost a ton of weight on this diet. Of course you could never do this for more than a week. You would have to do it maybe one week out of every month.
