Laxatives and bowel movements?

Laxatives and bowel movements? Topic: Laxatives and bowel movements?

Question: I'm 20, and I've been having terrible problems with making a bowel movement lately. Within the end of March into the beginning of April, whenever I'd have a bowel movement, it would be barely one (Tiny pebbles is the best way I can explain it; constipation and pain as well.) It got so bad from about April 4-6, that I didn't make a bowel movement at all, and was having constant stomach cramps, almost doubling over with it. I went out and got Colace and took it immediately, it helped (I took 2 pills and it was plenty to make me actually go a few times within the night.) Within the month of April, I began taking 1 pill of Colace every other day. I thought it would help me more so than hurt me. I've noticed on the days I don't take it, I don't really go to the bathroom, if at all it's again, tiny pebbles. Now, I'm scared, have I become dependent on them? I stopped taking them Thursday, and I haven't gone to the bathroom yet. I can't really go to a doctor, money and insurance issues.

I'm no doctor, so I could be wrong, but I believe you have to use things like colace for a very long time before your body will become dependent on them. One thing that always seems to get things moving for me is 12 grain bread. I would try buying a loaf of that and even if you just eat a few pieces of it toasted (its really yummy stuff), it might help you along in a more natural way. You may also want to try increasing the amount of water your drinking, try some juices and fruits (prune and prune juices are the best, but other juices will help as well) and try to relax and let nature take its course. I suffer from a touch of IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) once in a while and these kinds of things usually help me out. Try to steer away from foods like bagels and bananas... You may even want to try an over the counter fiber supplement such as Metamucil bars (almost like eating a cookie) - some of these products can even be found in stores like Dollar General or Family Dollar for reduced prices ($5 or less). Good luck - I hope this advice helps to get things moving for you. I know the discomfort your dealing with :(
