Question: A friend of mine is currently a 317lb fat mess. He's really depressed about it, too, but is ready to turn the situation around. He wants to have a beach-ready body by summer of 2010 (at least by July or so), which means he'll have lost enough weight to run around shirtless with a good deal of muscle tone. If he begins dieting tomorrow, what would be the best way to get him down to 180lbs or so within 9 to 10 months? That means he needs to lose an average of 15.3lbs per month through July.

I personally doubt it can be done safely, but the first step to take to get some quick weight loss in is to get rid of the excess fluid. If it is true that your buddy drinks a lot of liquids (and if he drinks a lot of beer, juice, or sugared sodas this will be super easy) here's your big opportunity. Get rid of beer and sugared sodas completely. Just cold turkey stop.Then look at salty snacks and adding salt to food. Cut that off cold turkey. You will start to see your pants loosening up and your belt tightening just by eliminating this. Do this for a full month and add in walking. Just walk to the post office and mail something. Just get out and walk. Don't be trying to join a gym. Walk a half mile and then walk back. Do that until you can breath steady doing it. Then do a mile and back. Keep your mind on the REASON you are losing the weight. Have him check his blood pressure, get that under control right away. The salt makes your body want more liquid and hang onto water. That's why you want it out of your diet.

the key to getting a flat stomach/six pack is lowering body fat percentage which you achieve by healthy diet and exercise. find daily calorie intake calculator on the net, enter all your stats and it will tell you how many calories you need a day to maintain, take off 300-400cal off that number and thats how much you need to lose. eat 5-6 small meals a day (eat every 2-3 hours - it optimizes your metabolism) 5-8 servings of fruit and veggies a day 8 glasses of water have complex carbs for breakfast - they give you energy have protein (lean meat, legumes etc) for dinner - repairs muscle cardio is the only fat burning exercise and burns fat all over your body (running, jogging, swimming, spinning, elliptical etc) 4-6 times a week for 30-50min (ideally 45min because the first 20-30min body burns carbs and only then starts burning fat), weight training a few days a week but never work on the same muscle group two days in a row (more muscle=faster metabolism) dont consume foods that are made of white flour (white bread, cakes, pasta etc.), sugar loaded foods (cookies, icecream, candy etc) and nothing fried, oily. ofcourse you can spoil yourself once in a while with a little treat:)

jogging is an excellent exercise because it let you lose weight evenly throughout your whole body. If you want to lose weight in specific areas, you should target them with exercises. Every week add to the number of repetitions. You will see the results in a week, guaranteed! You will see or feel under the fat - if you have any - six pack and muscles. Dumbbells do wonders. Much better than these crunches - I came up to three hundreds and there was no results AT ALL. With the dumbbells you will see it in a week.
