Question: Ok I am involved in a weight loss competition at work. It will be going on for five weeks. I currently weigh 160 and am 5ft 6in. To place I am guessing I need to lose about 14lbs in this five week span. I know most of my competition will be doing the low carb diet during this time. I cannot do the low carb diet b/c it turns me into a complete biotch and it makes me focus on food to the point that I overeat. I've read people who do low carb lose a lot of water weight at first. Will this give the others a big boost in weight loss to where I shouldnt compete? My plan is going to be lots of cardio (jogging, jumping rope) and I am going to stay away from my weights during this time. I am already a healthy eater, so I am going to keep a close watch on my calories. I already drink lots of water, eat fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and have three meals a day with two snacks.

Your plan sounds excellent! The only thing I would recommend would be to do weights as well, but light weights, high repetitions, in a circuit. This way you will be toning your muscles and burning fat at the same time, without GAINING muscle (aka more lbs that you don't want RIGHT NOW). Honestly, the low carb will give the others an advantage, as they will lose weight quicker, in general. BUT, to circumvent this, you should do your cardio twice a day...first thing in the am, and after dinner, try the circuit. Do it at an intense pace to keep your body constantly burning calories. Hope you understand what I mean by circuit. If not, here's a brief synopsis: 1 set of pushups IMMEDIATELY followed by 1 set of squats IMMEDIATELY followed by 1 set of crunches and repeat. Use little-to-no rest between, and don't train the same body parts in a row. Reps should be in the 15 to 20 range. Good luck. And remember, this is a short term challenge. If you don't win, it's ok, because you are making long term changes for a healthier life. It's worth it.

Fun!! Heres a Good Food Plan!! I Hope You Win!!! One egg, one half an English muffin or piece toast (Sara Lee Delightful whole wheat) with I Can't believe it's not Butter spray, a glass of V-8 juice or OJ, coffee (all you want if black) or serving size creamer. Breakfast should be somewhere around 200 calories Snack: Fresh fruit, apples, strawberries, or melon are good. 1 string cheese, graham crackers, yogurt (Danon light and fit), hard boiled egg, raw veggies, or a handful of nuts. 100 Calories A lean cuisine,Or, a sandwich with lean meat lettuce, tomato, onion, and pickle, with mustard and Smart Beat Mayo on Sara Lee Delightful whole wheat bread, a salad with low cal dressing or balsamic, OR, a cup of soup and half of a sandwich. Lunch somewhere around 200-300 Calories Snack 100 Calories 4 0z of chicken baked with veggies (tons if you want), OR, Turkey chili, OR fish and veggies, OR, a big giant salad with low calorie dressing like balsamic, OR, another tv dinner......dinner should be 300-500 calories Snack 150 Calories You are aiming for a 1200-1500 calorie day. It will be hard at first but you will get a routine and learn how to skinny down your day. I use an elliptical for 35 min in the am and another 25 in the evening. Though they say 25 minutes a day of good solid cardio is all you need to lose weight. I'd start at 15 minute workouts so that you don't get discouraged and work up to at least the 25 minute mark. I suggest the elliptical over the treadmill if you can, though, I did treadmill for a year too. I've added circuit weights 3X weekly. And for best results you need to be eating on average about every 3 hours to keep your blood sugar level. Drink 8 oz of water at every meal and snack and exercise with water on hand. Edit: Oh, don't weigh yourself every day. Just don't do it. You are not going to suddenly lose ten pounds or gain it in one days time. 1-2 pounds a week is really a good weight loss! I try to weigh in every two weeks or even less. Go with how you FEEL and how your clothes FIT. And look for changes in your face first. And take pictures of yourself in a tank and form fitting pants at the beginning. Do so again every 3 months. Post the pictures in the bathroom when you begin to see change. Realize that every day is not going to be perfect. You will mess up. The trick is the exercise EVERY day no matter how you are eating. Good luck.

distracted dining will get you in trouble avoid eating in front of a television or in a movie theater as you re bound to consume more calories

combine your resistance training with short bursts of high intensity cardio to increase your post workout calorie burn

eat a rainbow of colors have at least one brightly colored fruit or vegetable in each meal and if appropriate eat the skins thats where youll find a powerhouse of antioxidants
