Originally Answered: Is Colon Cleansing Legit, Or Even Safe?
A question on colon cleansing should come under the category "alternative medicine." It is not recognized by mainstream physicians for any curative, detoxifying, or preventive purpose.
Actually, when you say "colon cleansing," I assume you mean ememas or colonics. But colon cleansing through use of particular foods or supplements is in the same category.
The only valid purpose of an enema in an otherwise healthy person is to clean you colon prior to a diagnostic or surgical procedure.
Many of these colon cleansing faddists use herbs or chemicals that don't belong in the bottom part of your gut. There is a potential for damage to the delicate tissues in the gut, and there is the possibility that you may absorb something with toxic properties.
Your digestive system works on a first-in, first-out basis. What you ate today is behind what you ate yesterday. Things do not accumulate there. That is impossible. So don't believe anyone who tells you you need a colonic to clear out toxins that have accumulated.
