Question: I have PCOS and one of the treatment for it is birth control pills. I'm trying to lose weight so I want to know will I gain weight if I take birth control pills? Is it a direct link to gaining weight or does birth control pills makes you have a bigger appetite? I just want to know...

I have pcos and was giving birth control pills as treatment for about 6 years. Last summer I stopped taking them and tried changing my diet instead. The results have been fantastic! I still get zits and sometimes I act a little crazy (hormones out of whack, yay!), but I feel and look MUCH better than I ever did on birth control pills. I tried loosing weight while on the pill and it was pretty much impossible. It causes your body to retain water (and fat) which makes it harder to loose weight. It depends though, I had to be on the pill with the highest concentration of hormone, so the side effects of the pill were magnified. I went off the pill and lost 35lbs in about 6 months (with healthy diet and moderate excercise . This is what I did: -Walk or bike to school/work -NO DIETS. This advice should be regular eating habits you should be getting into and sticking with. -Cut out processed foods -Eat LOTS of whole foods and try to make EVERYTHING from scratch (a good rule of thumb is if a food has more than 5 listed ingredients or lists ingredients that you can't pronounce/don't know what they are, don't buy it. Look up a recipe and make it yourself) -Lots of veggies and fruit -DON'T STARVE YOURSELF, in fact you should probably be eating more (of the right things) -Get in most of your calories in the morning with breakfast -Make smoothies with fresh fruits and veggies (Green smoothies are yummy!), add flax and maca root powder (you can also look for supliments that have maca root in them. The flax and maca help balance your hormones. -Less salt in your diet will help you not retain as much water (Less than 5000mg a day) -DRINK LOTS OF WATER to clear toxins from your body daily -Try to aim for foods that have less than 5g of sugar/serving (or less) You can cheat...but only about 20% of the time...and you probably shouldn't make it a habit... For more info I'd recommend reading The Ultimate PCOS Handbook. Following the book, my periods are on time, my skin clears up (mostly), I stay at a healthy weight all without being on the pill. It increases your appetite. So, if you can control that and keep that in mind, then you won't have a problem. I choose depo for birth control and A LOT of girls gain weight on it as you may know, but I didn't. The doctor told me if i resist the appetite it would give me then I would be fine.

Yes, it depends mostly on the pill itself and who takes it. Most women don't gain weight though, especially if you already are conscious of what you eat. If you're concerned just ask the doctor for the pill without this as a possible side effect.
