PLEASE HELP: Do you think I have depression or lupus?

PLEASE HELP: Do you think I have depression or lupus? Topic: PLEASE HELP: Do you think I have depression or lupus?

Question: Ever since about a year ago when I was 13, I've been really fatigued, losing weight unintentionally, my joints and muscles have been in pain, I've had trouble concentrating, difficulty remembering things, trouble breathing and swallowing, tingling and numb fingers and toes, my neck has been hurting, I've had rashes on my face and elbows from the sun, and my chest has been in pain as well (especially when I swallow or take a deep breath). This has been on and off and hey're usually moderate, occasionally severe. I went to the pediatrician and she said I probably have depression. and that not being well mentally means you won't be well physically. I've been doing research, and on several different sources, lupus is one of the possible diseases. I don't know if I should talk about this with her. I've already had blood drawn to check for antibodies, and I'm going to get a physical examination. Should I talk about this? I don't know if I have something that serious.Do you think its a possibility?

You seem to have a fatigue problem. Perhaps the energy vitamin B12 can help or a vitamin B complex. Coenzyme Q10 can also help to boost your energy level as in http://au.search.yahoo.com/search?p=%22c... The super food Spirulina is another good energy booster. One of the most common fatigue causes is anxiety, which is known to effect 40 million U.S. adults each year. Anxiety is a state of fear of real or imagined danger, which is manifested as increased heart rate, trembling, panic, weakness, extreme fatigue and stomach or intestinal discomfort. Anxiety disorders make up the largest mental illness diagnosis in the U.S. Besides anxiety there are many other common fatigue causes such as insufficient sleep, too much sleep, under eating, thyroid problems or other illnesses (such as anemia, mononucleosis, CFS, glandular fever and many others), side effects from medication, dehydration, overexertion, an unhealthy diet and other causes as discussed in http://au.search.yahoo.com/search?p=%22c...

The list of "signs of lupus" is actually criteria used by lupus researchers to qualify people for clinical trials. It is not a check list for patients to figure out whether or not they have lupus. Fibro and lupus are both autoimmne diseases. Autoimmune disease often have similar symptoms and more than one occur at the same time. Stress makes autoimmune disease worse. Every surgery is a stress. Chest pains should ALWAYS be reported to your doctor. This is serious stuff. Consider resting as much as possible. The house cleaning can wait. If you push yourself you will never improve. Think about what is really important to you. Do those things and let the others go for a while. Ask for help. Lower your standards. The most important thing is for you to recover. A diagnosis of lupus is made this way: 1. Medical history 2. Symptoms 3. Variety of lab tests 4. After other disorders have been ruled out It takes the average lupus patient 3-4 years to be diagnosed. There is no definitive lab test for lupus.

Does arthritis run in your family? Get tested for scleroderma. Persons with this condition can have your symptoms. But they can have other conditions at the same time as well. Lupus is one of them. If you have Raynaud's (bad circulation/very cold hands/feet/nose) there is a 95% chance you may develop scleroderma or CREST syndrome. Do some research and discuss your symptoms with your doctor. And whatever you do, keep a journal/log of all your symptoms, pain and activities so you can determine what may trigger your symptoms. Best wishes. P.S. I'd suggest your b/f do the same, especially if it's their hands and feet that are being affected.

Depression can cause SOME of those things, but not all. Wait to see what happens with the autoantibody panel. You ultimately need to be evaluated by a pediatric rheumatologist. Find one at www.rheumatology.org. I had similar symptoms at age 13. I gave up looking for answers because it was not taken seriously. I went undiagnosed for 38 YEARS. Now, at age 61, my lupus is well controlled and I have a better quality of life than I haver had.

Nelson Originally Answered: 5-htp for depression? ?
Several double-blind placebo controlled clinical trials have demonstrated the effectiveness of 5-HTP in the treatment of depression. 5-HTP is a naturally occurring amino acid and chemical precursor as well as a metabolic intermediate in the biosynthesis of the neurotransmitters serotonin and melatonin from tryptophan. It is sold without prescription in the US, UK, and Canada as a dietary supplement for use as an antidepressant, appetite suppressant and sleep aid. It is sold in many European countries for major depression under trade names like Cincofarm, Levothym, Oxyfan, Telesol, Tript-OH and Triptum. When combined with antidepressant MAOIs or SSRIs, 5-HTP can cause acute serotonin syndrome. When combined with carbidopa (for Parkinson's) 5-HTP causes nausea and vomiting. I took it once at 100mg but it seemed to make me feel nervous so didn't continue it, but I still had Wellbutrin in my system, I'm going to try it again. It is quite expensive compared to a few dollars co-pay on an antidepressant.
