Question: Hi MY 4 YEAR OLD MIN PIN HAS SORES IN THE CORNERS OF HIS MOUTH. ITS ALMOST AS IF HIS MOUTH IS TOO SMALL AND WHEN HE OPENS IT TOO WIDE IT RIPS AT THE CORNERS. SCABS FORM AND HEALING LOOKS LIKE IT OCCURS BUT IT IS A CONSTANT CONDITION and HE ALWAYS HAS SORES. THIS HAS BEEN GOING ON FOR A YEAR. VET SAID GIVE HIM BENADRYL DAILY AS THESE ARE JUST ALLERGIES. (benedryl does not help) NOW THE INNER CORNERS OF HIS EYES ARE OPENING AND LOOK SORE. THE EYE IS NOT AFFECTED JUT THE INNER CORNERS LIKE WHERE WE WOULD RUB SLLEP FROM OUR EYES. NO PUS BUT LOOKS WATERY NO SCABBING THERE. NOW THIS VET SAYS CANINE LUPUS AND GAVE HIM ANTIBIOTICS to try. MY DOG TOOK THESE FOR 10 DAYS AND HIS EYES CLEARED UP AND APPEARED NORMAL. NOW TWO WEEKS LATER SORES ARE BACK. DOC SAYS BIOPSY . ONLY WAY TO TELL. DO YOU HAVE ANY SUGGESTIONS? I DONT SEE THESE SYMPTOMS WHEN i LOOK UP CANINE LUPUS. PLEASE HELP IF YOU CAN AND TELL ME WHAT YOU THINK IT MIGHT BE AND ALSO IS AN EXPENSIVE BIOPSY THE ONLY WAY TO TELL?? BLOOD TESTS WONT PROVIDE ANSWER?. THANKS

Biopsy is an option but the blood tests should have been done first. I'd get a second opinion before paying for the biopsy. This is a very tough disease to deal with so you may want to find a specialist to treat your dog if lupus is confirmed. A general vet usually does not have the experience or resources to be up to date on the most current effective treatments. I'll find you some links on lupus in canines. There are two types known to exist in dogs so I'll try to find both. http://www.petplace.com/dogs/systemic-lu... http://www.petplace.com/dogs/discoid-lup...

Hi there! So sorry to hear about your min pin! Lupus is no fun in dogs! i have a 10 year old female german sheppard she was diagnosed with lupus when she was 4 years old.. her lupus is located mainly on her nose , similar in your case! You need to get another Vets opinion... i was told that my Maggie had allergies by at least 2 vets and as well recommended benedryl which does nothing! eventually my wonderful vet diagnosed her with lupus and NO i did not spend $600 that is just outrageous!!!!!!! blood samples were done which didnt cost much.. definitely less that $100 and i have had a few biopsy's done on different areas on Maggie's body and the many of them i have not had to even pay !! but they dont cost that much! Maggie unfortunately has to take medicine to keep it under control... once it is under control just a small dose keeps her lupus under wraps! It is a steroid medication i dont have the prescription on me right now! But find yourself a good honest Vet! I wish you the best for you and your little man!

I say go to a new vet! (And ow, the CapsLock is killing me) Lupus isn't specifically treatable with antibiotics. And that should be one stellar biopsy for it to have to cost $600. Don't get me wrong, I don't doubt that your vet knows his stuff, but vets also have to make money too. Keep that in mind. Go to a new vet, and request a prescription for Gentamicin opthalmic drops, the smallest bottle available should be something like 9ml. Squeeze 2 drops in each eye 2x daily for 14 days. If this clears it up, you know the eye issue is not related. Also, have them look into a Doxycycline Hyclate regimen of 100mg 2x daily for 14 days. Also ask for a topical antibiotic cream or salve. This should clear up the mouth issue. It's possible that there is an underlying cause, but the cracking and soreness has caused a secondary infection, treatable with antibiotics. Some hallmark symptoms of Lupus are as follows: lameness or stiff joints, weakness/lethargy, pale gums, excessive drinking and urination. Ulcers and loss of pigment on the nose or thickening and cracking of the paw pads. If that doesn't sound like your dog, it's probably not Lupus. Add more Vitamin C to your dog's diet, and offer some raw meat at least once a day (chicken or beef). See if he improves over the course of two weeks. You might also try moistening his food with hot water and letting it sit before feeding. It's possible that the hard kibble is irritating the sores at his mouth. Look into holistic and natural care for your dog, as MinPins can be prone to skin issues. Please make sure your dog is UTD on all vaccines too. PS: A biopsy of the affected tissue means that they're going to take off a scab or piece of skin from the wound and look at it under a microscope. They may also send it to a lab where they'll swab it over a petri dish and let it sit for 48 hours, only to tell you that it's bacterial and he needs more antibiotics. Does that sound like something worth $600 to you?!! In the meantime, get yourself a basic Pet Insurance plan, and then wait till it becomes active and see the new vet again. This should take care of the cost if the dog does in fact need a tissue biopsy. I'd be more concerned about cancer. Lymphosarcoma often begins with symptoms like these. It's not typical for your dog's age or lack of other symptoms, but it's just a thought. Good luck to you and your pup!

Considering there is no biopsy to determine lupus, as lupus can only be diagnosed symptomatically and by checking blood levels of certain anti-bodies, I think you should get a second opinion.

Hi! Systemic Lupus Erythematosus, also known as Lupus, is a rare autoimmune disease where the blood has unusual antibodies, which attack the tissues of the dog's body. Click the link below for more information. Thank you!

Type 2 diabetes, usually referred to as adult onset, is when your body produces insulin but can not use it properly. This type can be treated successfully with the right diet and exercise in most circumstances. Read here https://tr.im/APvTd If blood sugars are not kept under control at some point insulin will probably be integrated / oral medications are also available. People with diabetes can live long, happy lives but must be diligent in their care and make sure you see your endocrinologist on a regular basis.

Did your vet say that your pooch will have to be put under anesthesia for the biopsy? If so, that is a few hundred dollars to do so.

My sister is a carrier but does not exhibit any of the symptoms. She found out when she went through in-vitro pregnancy. She had to have the boys tested after they were born.
