Question: First of all; I'm OCD. I have to make sure 50 times if something's right; if something doesn't seem right, I freak out. It affects my life, and I hate it. I'm afraid of various things happening to me; it makes me really anxious and nervous pretty much. It makes me talk to myself, (please don't happen, i won't die, etc). I check the door and the windows every night, and i make sure all the clocks are at the right time. Along with that, I have a lot of panic and anxiety attacks. Now, about that... I'm addicted to the 11:11 superstition. It's affected my life. I checked the world clock to see whenever it's 11:11. It seems that every time it's either :11 or :41, it's 11:11 in a different country. I make wishes blah blah blah. But sometimes, I make a bad wish (I wish to die, to be ugly, to fail, etc). It drives me crazy to the point of talking to myself and isolating myself from others. What drives me most crazy is when I randomly look at the clock and it's 11:11. or 9:41 (11:11 in another country) or 3:11 (11:11 in another country), and make a bad wish. I can't sleep when it's *anynumber*:01-10. I can only sleep once it's after :11 (when it's :12, etc). I have to wait until 11:11 has passed. This has drived me insane and I want to fix my problem. I keep on having to tell myself who I am and what i'm not; but it's no use. People catch me talking to myself and it embarrasses me. I've had this problem for half a year. It first started out as a joke, but now i'm really addicted and it's driving me crazy. Please help. It's really stressful. Most of my "wishes" don't come true, but still I believe in it! I DON'T KNOW WHY!!! :(Please help me. I'm literally on the verge of crying, and I have excessive panic attacks. I can't sleep, my temperature rises, and I'm trying to fix myself. Please, help! I'm only 14 :/

Look for some kava kava tea at your local health food store. Convince an MD that you have general anxiety disorder, and that you need a benzo. I take 40 mg. of valium, and 30 mg. of dalmane. Ativan seems to be the latest benzo that doctors are prescribing, klonopins are also popular. Find out what mg. is best for you. But know that they are very addicting, but they do work. Many doctors try to pass off other drugs like hydroxzine for anxiety, but it's only an antihistamine that makes me tired. Buspar is also a joke. Also, you can go to NAMI support groups in your area. That way you can talk to others about your anxiety. Even if this seems terrifying, it's often good theory to talk in a group.

Is there any way that you can enlist some professional help to "fix you"? A lot of OCD types do best with a mix of drug therapy and counseling. The drug therapy is for reducing the anxiety and "mind racing" while the counseling is for helping you to decide what to keep of your OCD, what to throw away of your OCD, and how to accomplish everything you want. Have you spoken to your parents and/or a school counselor or, have you kept it all bottled up within yourself using some type of masking behavior? OCD and phobias seem to have some similar characteristics. They ask/demand the person to behave irrationally even though the person knows that it is irrational. It is not uncommon for them to build upon each other; like going from checking that something is correct 50 times to having a thing for an 11:11 superstition in addition. Further, as the person goes through their ritualistic behaviors (i.e. checking the doors, windows, and clocks every night multiple times) they also reinforce the emotional side of their behaviors (i.e. the feeling of need or panic to do so or else) even though there is no particular incident let alone traumatic incident. Both OCD and phobias tend to feed upon themselves; often in a pattern and methodology at least similar to "self actualization". If you want to "fix yourself" on your own....try "self actualization" and "desensitization" concepts, mechanisms, and tools in the direction you want, you choose, and that will enlarge your world rather than shrink it. Thinking wise, work on seeing the world in a "glass half full" rather than a "glass half empty" perspective. Begin with making realistic and accomplishable "good wishes" rather than "bad wishes" then imagine on how they could come to be; with time, actually work towards making those good wishes come to be Begin by deciding what of your OCD behaviors are not very rational, don't seem to make sense, and seem a little off/crazy. Begin by deciding which, (start small) of your slightly off OCD behaviors you're going to monitor and then modify; i.e. if you're checking the windows more than once per night, figure out how often, write out a check list/chart, and start reducing the number of checks while recording how often they are checked (theoretically, the most the need to be checked is once per evening/night). It might also be a good thing to give yourself some "me time". That would be 5 minutes or more of time that you can simply chill, relax, listen to soothing music, breath deeply, and shut your mind down. Check out anxiety reduction out on the internet too.

You're not alone :-) I also have terrible anxiety, OCD & PTSD. Find someone you can talk to. You are carrying a huge burden and fear is gripping you tightly. You've taken a huge step by asking for help...hopefully there is someone in your life (school counselor, minister, family member, etc...) that is trustworthy and won't take advantage of you. Or most places have a helpline. You could even call a suicide hotline to get in touch with mental health resources. Best of luck to you.
