Question: I'm a 26 year old female and healthy. I decided to start eating better and cutting junk foods out of my diet (Chips, soda etc.) to be more healthy. I spoke with my doctor at the time who suggested I speak with a nutritionist to make sure I did everything right. I knew I would have to adjust to the new foods before they started tasting normal. But its been a year and the healthy foods still taste bad to me. I've found myself skipping meals some days because nothing I can eat is appetizing to me. I've been having to force myself to eat because my interest in food has slowly gone down a few months into changing my eating habits. Celery is suppose to be salty but it tastes bitter, chicken is bland even with herbs such as oregano and rosemary, it just feels like I'm eating bland chicken covered in dead leaves. Potatoes still taste good to me without putting salt on them. I've seen my doctor encase my issue might be a symptom of something. But her exam and tests show I'm fine. My sense of smell is good and I'm taking no medications that would affect this. I even went to my dentist thinking it might be dental related but I came out with a perfect exam. The only food I look forward to anymore is on Friday where I allow myself a few small slivers of ice cream for dessert. I find myself eating it as slowly as I can to make it last with the thought of "This is the only good tasting food your going to eat for the next 7 days." When will these new foods finally start tasting good? Some foods I have been eating are fresh non frozen fruits and vegetables for snacks such as bananas or apples or oranges that all taste sour to me. I've tried different salad recipes but they all taste like I'm chewing leaves I plucked off my tree outside even with the lemon juice I put as an alternative to store bough salad dressings due to the high salt and calories. Everything I try either tastes bitter sour or bland. I can't recall when it started tasting good as I have done it for so long now. I can tell you that experimenting with spices is the way to go. Garlic and ginger are two of my favorites.

That was overly offensive. I do understand that eating the wrong foods is a problem, but it doesn't just affect "Blacks" (try African American) What do you mean by "they" & "their"? Not all African Americans are poor. There isn't one community where every AA person lives. So I don't know what you mean by "their neighborhoods" But I guess we need to figure out a way for healthy foods to be more accessible. I watched a program about fast food in America & the reason people get it is because it's cheap and convenient. We need healthy food chains & grocery stores to have those same adjectives. Among African Americans we have to stop pushing the ideas of "Black culture" with soul food. This is bigger than one 'race' it's taking over the whole country.

Wow, people will do anything to prove that we are the superior race. Have you gone to the mall in a predominantly white neighborhood lately. Women's average size is now a 14/16 so the problem isn't necessarily race related.

What you're doing is not healthful. It is essential that you eat foods that taste good to you. Forcing yourself to eat "healthy" foods is going to do you no good. You won't digest them well. You can eat them from now to doomsday and they won't start tasting good to you. You need to trust your body. Your likes and dislikes are messages from your body as to what it needs. You've fallen into the trap that so many people fall into--taking the popular notions of what healthful eating is as gospel. The problem with those notions is that they just aren't true for a lot of people. They favor foods that are not calorie dense and do not contain the things that boost metabolism. Both of those things add up to a diet that lowers metabolism--and most people these days are already hypometabolic. Your body doesn't want those foods for a reason. It wants foods that are going to boost your metabolism--calorie dense foods, foods that contain starch, fats (especially saturated), sugars, salt. All the things that one finds in "junk" food (except saturated fats, unfortunately)--which is exactly why they taste good to people. Junk foods aren't inherently tasty; they taste good to people for a reason--because they contain those things that boost metabolism. When one's metabolism is strong and one no longer needs so much of those metabolism-boosting things, those foods will not taste so good. The body will instead want those so-called healthy foods that don't taste good to you now. They will taste good to you, when your body is ready for them. But right now, you need to follow what your body wants. That doesn't mean you have to eat a lot of processed foods. Make your own food, cook from scratch, and eat the foods you love. That's what will get you healthier.

Shithead....THERE IS NO SUCH THING as "EATING HEALTHY". Food is FOOD. If you eat too many calories...YOU GET FAT. That is HOW IT WORKS. If you want to eat things with LESS unnecessary CHEMICALS such as fillers and preservatives etc...that's FINE. EAT GOOD and GOOD TASTING FOOD...which MIGHT HAVE A LOT OF CALORIES. Why TORTURE YOURSELF?!?!? If you are OVERWEIGHT and want to LOSE weight...STOP EATING SO MANY CALORIES PER DAY...and you will LOSE the weight. You don't even need to EXERCISE. Eat ICE CREAM...PIZZA and CHEESEBURGERS with FRENCH FRIES if you want...just STOP at a daily limit. When I need to lose...I eat 1500 calories (or less if I am not hungry) per day. 2000 is about average to maintain.
