A well functioning immune system will attack bugs like viruses but when you have an autoimmune disease your body is confused and thinks that YOU are the disease so attacks itself. Slowly the body breaks itself down to the point where its difficult to function normally, so you might get involuntary muscle movements and pain etc. Diseases like Multiple Schlerosis and Rheumatoid arthritis are examples of autoimmune problems.

The symptoms that manifest are really dependent upon which organ/tissue is the target of the autoimmune disorder. In general, there would be chronic inflammation of that organ or tissue, and likely progressive loss of function but again it depends on the specific condition. The cause of these conditions is that the immune system inappropriately recognizes "self" antigens as "non-self" and attacks them as if they were an invading pathogen. There's quite a long list of different autoimmune disorders here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Autoimmune_...

In a nutshell, an autoimmune disorder is (usually) a genetic disorder which causes the cells of immune system, attack the cells of the body. For example, in Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) the cells of the immune system attack and destroy the joints of the patient. As far as the symptoms, they differ depending on which autoimmune disorder you are talking about. In the case of RA, the joints that are involved are the same joints on each side of the body (for example if the right wrist is affected, so is the left wrist; if right knee is affected, so is the left knee; and so on).

Your symptoms are not the normal ones for lupus. And constipation certainly is not. Black, tarry stools is a serious danger sign. It means there is old blood in the stools. Get it taken care of ASAP. A gastroenterologist would be a good choice. The constipation can call all these other symptoms, except maybe the rash. Stop listening to "people" and take charge of your medical care. Are you eating a minimum of 5 servings of fruits and vegetables every day? Are you drinking enough water? These help alleviate constipation. Cheese, refined sugar and flour and meat all slow down the movement of feces. You probably have hemorrhoids because you are straining to have a bowel movement. A rheumatologist is the kind of doctor who diagnoses and treats lupus. Stacy (who claims to no longer have lupus) wrote a book and is hoping to sell it to you. Be careful about what you read in here.
