Question: I'm 13, 5'6'', and 177 pounds. I hate being overweight. I would like to lose at least 40 pounds before school starts again next fall. Diet pills are out of the question and I'm not starving myself. I'm lactose intolerant so something with a dairy substitute is needed. I don't want any comments like I should just wait until my growth spurt. I really hate my body and I want to lose weight! I'm very active, I usually walk for 30-60 minutes a day. I have fast food once every three months.

There's a few books on the subject of weight loss that I think are interesting and better then "starve yourself for 30 days and look like a super model" which is garbage. Whatever you do, don't try throwing up and not eating. That's horrible. You said you are active and walk 30-60 minutes a day. That's great, so keep that up. During your teen years weight gain/loss is very strange, so don't get discouraged ever. It's the start of the summer and you have a while to get into a "good" shape that you feel is comfortable so use this time to get into the habit of eating a certain way. Obviously you need to know your blood type, but just ask your parents about it. It says that following the guide based on your blood type will not only help you lose/gain weight(whichever you are trying to achieve) but feel less fatigued. Some foods, as shown in there, give certain people feelings of being bloated. I too have noticed this as I eat certain foods, sadly the ones I enjoy. I am not a sponsor of this book, just read it and felt it was good as a guide to go off of. There are a wide variety of foods, it's not just another "eat fruits/vegetables and nothing else" diet. It's not even really a diet. It's like telling yourself "eat this, feel sick and get bloated. Eat these, feel good and don't feel bloated." So it's more of a feel good eat better book :)

In general...NO! Liquid diets are very short term. I've tried them and always gain abck the weight. As soon as you go back to regular food the weight piles bakc on because your body went into starvation mode. After a while you lose weight and your body gets "used" to routine. Change up your diet. but do not go into these starvation diets they result will leave much to be desired. Cutting down and sugar and carbs as you had is good. (EVen though there is health in carbs just you know cut down as you have) Try a new diet. Switching things up will help. coffee and water will do one things for you...Screw your body up. You've been doing a really great job on Atkins, don't mess that up. EXERCISE. What have you been doing so far? Seriously exercising getting some cardio will help bump some weight off. Investing in a dumbbell maybe 10 or 20 pounds will work wonders. It wont bulk you up like many women believe it will help you shed fat. and you don't need to lift like crazy. Just 2 reps of 15 or 20 is enough to get you going. You can even just dance for a half hour or more and it'll help. Get your body moving doing whatever you like. In a sense you can eat whatever you want as long as you burn more calories than you take in. Eat clean foods which means no processed food. Eve stick to Atkins and up your exercise. I hope this helps. Just please don't give up and forget the starvation/liquid junk. but if you really must go the detox route do it the right way. You can drink fruit juices (organic) for a day and it helps your body shed. Trying a cleanse may also help. Never exceed more than a day or two on these diets. Cleaning your colon helps a ton and gets rid of junk. That may be all you need. You could also go vegan for a while. There's a 21 day diet I believe that has worked for a friend of mine.

Diet and exercise is the key, and you are already halfway there. Walking is probably the most underrated form of exercises there is, so you keep on do it. Just make sure you have a good pair of shoes to reduce the chances of ankle and knee pains/injuries. As for diet, cut out as much as you possibly can refined sugar and food made with refined or bleached flour. They pack so much calorie that it is simply impossible to burn it all in a day. Go for high fiber whole grain food. Eat your vegetables and fruits, but go easy on the fruits because they contain sugar. Since you are lactose intolerant, consider drinking soy milk or milk that are lactose free (something like Lactaid). You can also eat certain cheese that are aged because the aging process breaks down lactose. Yogurt is another dairy product that is lactose free - the active culture breaks down lactose. Also, make sure any dairy substitute you consume do not have hydrogenated oil. Fast food once in 3 months is ok. Eating healthy does not mean you can never ever have the bad stuff. It just means you can't have it everyday and once in 3 months is very praise-worthy. Good job.
